Helo Ben dropping $600 checks - what to do?

Postby emersonbiggins » Fri 18 Jan 2008, 11:41:52

Not much stimulus on my part, just going to pay down some credit card debt. Pretty much a wealth transfer from taxpayers (well, more likely their children) to creditors. No flat screens here.

How about you?

With interest rates dropping and looking to drop alot more before the Fed is done, you might want to consider using that "free money"
to buy prep stuff.

I had to take out a HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit) to buy some adjacent land last year. Since the rate is tied to the Fed's prime rate, the cost of borrowing that money just keeps getting cheaper. Would I love to be totally debt free? Yes. I was before I did this, but I *had* to have the land. If you are way in debt, pay it down! Especially if it's high interest credit card debt or other debt that isn't getting cheaper with the lowering interest rates.

Still, I need some gizmos for the Kubota to do more work around here and could just as well spend it on that rather than paying down the HELOC.

Correct, this "stimulus" will do little but delay another month from the inevitable.

Perhaps $1600 monthly checks indefinitely, courtesy J6P? We'll spend our way to wealth! :-D

pretty sure that I am going to use it to pay down debt.

I might end up saving it a few months to wait and see what happens. The only other thing I might buy is to take this check and my income tax return check and buy two 20' cargo containers.

I'd spend half on women and booze.

And then just waste the rest.

I could easily spend a few hundred bucks restocking the pantry, maybe buy an old bred-back Jersey cow and some home-scale dairying equipment and get a few more fruit trees if it goes that far.

No stimulus here. I expected to owe more than that in Federal tax, so it just means I get to hold onto more of what I'd saved to pay the bill. :P

This consumer economy of ours is the very thing that is destroying the prospects for a livable planet for mankind in the future. It's pretty depressing to me that when it begins to falter, it becomes an emergency number one priority to get it back to full speed ahead.
How many years mankind has left may well depend on how quickly we can engineer a descent to a near subsistance economy. Our top priority now is to do exactly the wrong thing.
The battle to preserve our lifestyle has already been lost. The battle to preserve our lives is just beginning.

It is infuriating that our country has offshored all our manufacturing so that 70% of our economy is consumer spending. Disgusting.

What are you talking about? All this money will go straight to Russia and Saudi Arabia via the gas tank. Why not use the 145 billion to build a train system? Or as a coupon to buy solar panels? That would do far more for economic stimulus than sending it straight overseas for oil or China for more plastic crap.

Postby IanC » Fri 18 Jan 2008, 16:48:16

This is such a f****** farce! In my house, we'll probably just save it and decide later what it would be best spent on, if anything. I think most people will just go out and spend it on some crap made in abroad using dirty energy generation and shipped here by virtue of the last remaining cheap oil.

I totally agree with NeoPeasant's comment. I find it disgusting that we citizens of the US are reduced to mere "consumers", like so many fat pigs at a trough filled with shiny new baubles we are constantly bombared by marketers to believe we need.

In regard to the comment about this money being better spent my me rather than being sent to energy producing countries, I have a question: is this so-called stimulus money just going to be tacked-on to our $9,000,000,000,000 debt? If that's the case, then it isn't real money at all. It's just electrons in a computer somewhere being sent our way. Stupid. Destructive. Pointless.

Cynus-

Exactly my thought. Why not fix some shit thats broken or thats really needed. If we could stop blowing so much cash on military and use it to build more train tracks, nuclear power plants, and sexbots i wouldn't be so doomerish.

In some ways i'm wondering if this is the governments ways of cleaning out inventory that wasn't sold during Christmas?

I'm buying so good steaks and grilling out... Sick of eating squirrel.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'W')hat's the deal? $1600 tax credits? Who gets them?

Bush's proposal to "stimulate" [smilie=la.gif] the economy. $800 rebate for individuals, $1600 for married couples.

Read about it here - Bloomberg

Of course it is a wealth transfer to stockholders, wealth transferred from our kids - just as the tax plan.

This administration and the party in general is really good at getting the gun-toters and right to life folks to fall in line and foot the bill for their real constituency, just like the other party does for their real constituency.

Since I can’t see myself changing the system next month, my idea is to use whatever means necessary to position myself as best I can for whatever comes next and hopefully it will benefit my kids - since they are paying.
