$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'S')ince I can’t see myself changing the system next month, my idea is to use whatever means necessary to position myself as best I can for whatever comes next and hopefully it will benefit my kids - since they are paying.

Agreed. The best thing we could do for our kids would be to take as much fiscal pain as we can stand right now. Pay down the debt -public and private, make do with less, save some money for a rainy day and invest some of those savings in renewable energy.

The likelihood of that happening is about the same as my getting a date with Salma Hayek.

I've been thinking of buying a Ruger Mark II handgun for almost a year. It's a little semi-auto in .22 LR that would make an excellent pack gun, but I could never really justify purchasing another firearm.
But with this gift from tomorrow's taxpayers, I can get the pistol and maybe $1200 worth of dried beans. :-D

Seriously, though, I think I'm just going to screw with their plan and stick it in savings instead of spending it to "jump start" the economy.

Then again, that Mark II would make a sweet little firearm when I'm hiking through the woods ...

I've pretty much decided that if I get a check it's going to The Nature Conservancy. We're far better off preserving as much land as possible that hasn't been paved over yet than buying more crap from China or Saudi Arabia.

Hey, that's actually an excellent idea. :)

I think I will have a big ass party for all the neighbors and kids to celebrate the financial unwinding. Beer, brisket, and potato salad for everyone! We should be getting the checks just in time for the Fourth of July. One last humdinger of a party! Then back to the reality of the PO blues...

Well, at least I'll be able to pay off the credit card with it, so I can finally make the credit card go away and get the card company off my back. Might even be able to get caught up on my student loan payments. Very short term solution, which is great, but for someone who just turned 24 yesterday, such as myself, and is still rather young and with lots of debt, the long term outlook is rather depressing, regardless of whatever proverbial bone the government hands out to alleviate the short term pains.

It will go to savings. Finally getting closer to buying land close to relatives and I'll need all the extra useless paper money I can get!

Good idea, but how about cashing it for $20 bills to put in the cookie jar and to spend only at the farmers market?

Probably going to pay off some bills, perhaps buy a few things for the pantry or some silver, sure wont be buying a big screen TV or an expensive trip. Perhaps a laptop? Maybe a solar panel? A new tiller?

I suggest investing it in something that pays a good dividend. Not BAC, DOW, or BMY stocks but something like...

lawn garden/container garden or a good bicycle

They both can give you entertainment, better health, the garden can give you food, and they both save you a lot of money over the long run.

THIS IS AN UNPRECEDENTED CREDIT CRUNCH!! A credit crunch hasn't happened since the Great Depression. There is no place to invest your money if you are living month to month. Do not even waste it trying to pay off debt. BUY FOOD! Fill your pantries. If you lose your job, you will at least be able to eat. You work to eat anyway. Food prices will continue to rise, buy it now, with free money, while you can. This credit crisis will be full blown within 2 years, very likely much sooner. Jobs will be lost. Invest in Maslow's most basic need, the only one that really matters, your actual survival - especially if you have a spouse and friends depending on you. Take that money and buy as much food as possible. All canned goods are manufactured to last 2 years (minimum). Buy bulk rice, bulk beans, canned beans, dry pastas (all these will last virtually indefinitely if kept dry and at room temperature (cooler the better). Buy honey (indefinite shelf life),; spam last indefinitely and is cheap. Tuna last at least 5 years. Buy some vitamins. Peanut butter last two years, requires no cooking, full of fat, carbs, and proteins. It is the perfect survival food.

Dont' worry about your debt anymore, especially if you are already up to your ass in debt. Don't give this money to the credit card companies or the banks that are going under and taking you with them. Invest in the only thing that matters, which will get you through the next two years. That, and a good sleeping bag.

Likely I will use it towards the school taxes. Upstate NY has some of the highest! It won't cover the whole bill, but it will help since I was not expecting to have enough by August to pay it. Then I can start worrying about the town and county bill for next January!

Well put seahorse, especially the spam idea. Although I might add that getting some vegetable seeds would be a good idea, a few chickens, maybe some sheep, some lumber, and a spinning wheel to boot.

Maybe one last trip to Vegas! woo-hoo!

Thanks Horse, wise words anytime but best coming from you.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('seahorse', 'D')ont' worry about your debt anymore,

I assume you mean unsecured debt and secured debt on extraneous stuff, right? Careful here, man; lots of folks respect your advice…

I am seriously considering investing the 1600 in my wifes IRA for 2007, that would give us a tax free deposit and reduce our income in the eyes of the government while supporting our local credit union financially, all of which would be beneficial for us in the next two years or so and free up other income for stocking the pantry ect ect.
