The meaning of this analogy is that the majority of people may think they can still win the game, but the smart people see that it is hopeless well into the future.

The long house would be a terrible disease factory. 300 people sharing one house?

One person gets a cold and then everyone is sick or dead. No thanks I will be in the wilderness living in my cave, eating locust and honey.

there's certainly worse things to eat :)

It is not so much a sign that things are ok but a sign that people think things are ok. I live in a set of flats with about 15 other residences. Most of these are families with 1 or 2 children. I've noticed one other single man there and 2 single mums.

Just after Christmas I noticed that 2 flats had thrown away perfectly good roasting dishes rather than clean them up. It occured to me that these were probably from 2 of the 12(ish) family residences.

So possibly one in six families think everything is so good they can just dump their stuff and to hell with the cost, to themselves or otherwise.

I also know 2 people who are looking at loans for swanky new cars.

Another person has already booked a holiday (on credit) for later this year.

As long as there are loaners, there will be loanees.

I am glad you are out of debt, in debt is not a good way to live.

That was my point (in an ironic way).

I consider myself an above average chess player. I played once a match against someone far out of my league. He stopped playing and said I do not have a chance anymore. I did not believe him and thought I could still win and insisted to play on. He said it was a waste of time, but agreed to finish the game. 18 moves later my king fell ....

I did not see it coming ....

EXCELLENT POINT. I should have known I was beat back in 03, if not earlier. I still thought I could win......

There's a large "work your way out" sentiment in the US, which is idiotic of course. Once you have a year's income worth of debt, you're dead.

Very good analogy Lighthouse.

That is exactly where we are the board is set and the pieces are already in place. Most people are not going to know the game is up until the King falls.

They'll let the king run around the board for a while even when its over.
Plants, Thats an interesting dept figure you have for what you consider no way out. A years income? Thats probably about right for most people. The most credit card dept I ever had was about 12k, It took a couple years to pay that down. I would be screwed if I had a years wages worth of dept. Not to mention very depressed

Sittinguy you probably had that $12k in debt back when interest rates were below 10% too - they're 30% and sometimes more these days!

yeah, from my own observations, stuff I've read, other people's accounts of their debt hell, yes, I'd say if you have an year's income in debt, it's time to throw in the towel.

Now, if a year's income was maybe $90k gross, and you have that much debt, the now you're out of work and you'd be lucky to make $30k (as in impossibly lucky) then you're REALLY screwed.

But I'd say the rules of debt are:

(1) Debt no more. Cut up the cards.
(2) Tap your 401k, sell your house, get rid of the car, sell thine cloak and buy a sword, whatever assets you have, they get used to pay down the debt.
(3) A luxury meal shall be a burger off the Dollar Menu at McD's, You will cook at home, you will get to like oats, you will brew your own Maxwell House coffee, you will wear thrift store clothes, you will eat and live Amish to the greatest degree possible. Dabble in a bit of Freeganism if you can.
(4) You will learn who your friends are - almost no one, Poor = Untouchable in the US. You still learn to develop a thick skin and revamp your friends list.
(5) If you can't get out of debt under your own power after doing all of these, LET GO. If you're religious LET GO and LET GOD. You will get a job that's better for your heart and soul if you can, or you will have no job for a while if that's healing. You will not worry about money. You will toot a flute for spare change, learn to tie-dye, hippie it up if you like, And you will declare Bankrupcty which is still your Constitutional right.

And once it is over, you will debt no more. Once it's over you ought to be really REALLY pisses at the banksters and the debt system, no matter how tie-die and hippy you may have become on the outside, and remember, the thing that hurts them the most is to NEVER DEBT AGAIN.

LOL good one. What about that George Thorogood song about the guy who's late on the rent and drinks it up on "one borboun, one scotch, and one beeer" or something, pretty funny.

Maybe we need to come up with a thread for Depression II songs 8)

I guess it may only seem interesting to me the links I posted up to graphs showing futures contracts for our primary grains (and soon a main fuel crop) has increased around 300-400% in 3 years…
Not to mention the announcement I thought I just heard that said wholesale costs jumped their highest amount in 26 years.

Guess I am looking at or at least posting on the wrong forum.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
