$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TheDude', 'O')r to fiddle about while the fire gets closer?

How is there laughter, how is there joy, as this world is always burning?

That was said 2500+ years ago by a very wise Indian dude. The fire always approacheth. Or approaches. Or something like that. Either way, it's a total downer.

I'm here for entertainment / mental masturbation. And to seek answers to the occasional practical question. And because the level of conversation is higher than on most cyberspace and meatspace forums. But mostly cuz I'm bored. Entertain me.

I enjoy the threads & the characters.

Plus for learning & laughs and because I don't have much of "a life" in my community.

And connecting w/ others is as important, perhaps more important than "tending the compost heap or hoarding guns".

Partly because I live in a city that is driven by greed and materialism, so this is the only place I can come for a meaningful conversation. If it wasn't for PeakOil.com, I probably wouldn't talk at all.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'B')ecause I'm a loser with no life. And because of the power... the raw, unadulterated POWER!!! [smilie=5bullwhip.gif]

Seriously, I first came here to learn, and to get emotional support while I was in my freak out phase the first year after I learned the world was not as I thought. Then it became a place to get relevant information quickly, and to share prepping ideas. Then I developed relationships with some members, and was offered a moderator job which I enjoyed most of the time. I enjoy the interaction with my cyber-friends, being kept up to date with all the relevant news, getting ideas from the Planning forum, and facilitating the administration of this web site.

I agree with what Shannymara said, except I'm not a mod.

Becoming peak oil aware gave me great hope for the future. Prior to realizing just how close to peak oil we were, I was afraid we might consume/pollute the entire planet before we collapsed, and then after the collapse, there would be nothing left but cockroaches and rats. Now, I have hope that our future might look more like contraction, rather than complete collapse. Something of light might be salvaged. That is why I am so interested in this site.

Recently, I have been spending a lot more time in the forums simply because I have no more motivation to do my job. I have really bad short-timer's syndrome, since I have already lined up my next position/phase-of-life.

In a larger sense, becoming peak oil aware gave me a big existential kind of short-timer's syndrome. I mean, why keep laboring to support the system when it's all coming down so soon anyway?

The most interesting people don't care about status, and there are many here on the board. I would rather communicate with a homeless person who can quote Shakespeare while on crack, or ranting Viet Nam vets, than endure what passes for discourse, flowing like verbal sludge from Mr. or Mrs. Middle America--- non readers, non thinkers, sub-verbal, inarticulate serial consumers.

Wow, what a choice! An erudite drug addict or a suburban nonreader. I feel like that's pretty much my choice every day, here in this little town. Except it's meth, not crack. Let's get with the times, after all. Anyway, neither choice is enjoyable in the least.

Yeah, I agree with the people who are saying there's much more interesting discourse here than is available in the supposed real world, which just makes me want to nod off.

Last interesting conversation overheard in the county courtroom, Wasco Co., OR:
Commissioner 1: "Given limited county funds, should we hire another cop or another librarian?"
Commissioner 2: "How about a librarian with a gun?"
County Judge: "How about a cop who can read?"

I shit you not. I was there. It was 1999.

You've gone through eight years without one good conversation? Bet you miss the Rajneeshies!

My mom donated two copies of Voyage by Bus to the Ione Public Library (Morrow County). The author describes visiting Ione, and looking at the memorial to WWII victims (including my uncle). Both copies were on the table for the next book sale. That's the sort of thing that led to us moving!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('threadbear', 'I') was sentenced to Peak Oil forums by a lenient judge after I was caught sniffing glue. Not wise, as I started sniffing gasoline shortly after joining this forum--and I bought a hummer, moved to the suburbs and became a stock broker. I wish I'd been sentenced to a Christian Chastity forum instead because I could definitely use the action! :)

Actually.... I just like to kick back with other people who have anxiety disorders rooted in reality, rather than those engineered by Madison Avenue. Here if a poster is twittish enough to admit living in the burbs, in a starter castle, they won't get high-fives, just a puzzled, "huh"?--or worse.

LOL Shakespear was definitely a doomer before his time... To be or not to be, that is the question. Whether tis nobler of the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them. <--- definite doomer!

When you find a christian chastity forum let me know eh

I think disproving a relative drew me here, shock was what kept me for a while. THen I just got pissy and figured if I was going to annoy people in life I'd save that for here. BEsides there are some really good critical thinkers here who aren't afraid of a good debate. I respect that.

Well I lurk more than I post, mostly because I was so intimidated in the beginning. And then I get overheated and have to leave it for awhile because I get crazy thinking about it and my husband does not want to hear about it. But then when I start to want stuff, I come back and motivate myself because I don't want to be Mrs. Middle America, and if I don't keep up I start to slip into that.

That said though, I've always liked to read books about "olden times", and had a feeling almost like a homesickness that we have lost so much, and it is a feeling that has only grown as I've gotten older. I'm picking up on a few kindred souls here. I'm sure I know some people personally who feel that way, but it never comes up in conversation.

Oh yeah, and I'm the librarian with a gun type.

This forum was suggested to me by members of the Fluwiki forum. Some over there expect a 60 % mortality rate. The general consensus is that the only way to ride out the three waves of the coming pandemic is to shelter in place. Sheltering in place always brings up the question of supplies and the fear of wandering zombie hoards that will raid those supplies. When I suggested the simplest method of dealing with marauders was to shoot them, it was suggested that I reserve my comments to one of the gun nut sites like peak oil.
