The wikipedia write up keeps changing and now none of the key factors exist anymore. He was not named after a saint. This was invented afterwards to make it more religious and hide its origins.

hmmm, I posted this due to a conversation I had with an American tonite. Dutch people celebrate saint nicholas with mountains of gifts (obscene really) for their children every year on december the fifth, and call saint nicholas sinterklaas, which sounds like santaclaus in english. The gift giving at christmas is also not a tradition here.

Do you Dutchies have something like Knechtrupecht? I asked a Dutch mate, he said he didn't know (I somehow remember it from studying German).

Knechtruprecht beats the bad children and St. Niklaus gives presents to the good chlidren, as I remembered it. Maybe it isn't politically correct.

we have "black" petes as the help of saint nicholas and if you are a bad boy you get slapped on the ass with a some bound together branches (the roe) and if you were really bad you go in the bag and are taken back where (according to dutch tradition) saint nicholas resides for the rest of the year.

Yes, this is what he said. But Knecht Ruprecht? maybe it's a regional German thing. Strange that I remember (or half remember?) from my school German.

I guess this tradition has been sacked owing to considerations of political correctness, no?

Well, this Knecht Ruprecht, it seems, is not merely a figment of my imagination:

Wikipedia on Companions of Santa

But the politically correct, close your ears and eyes (mouths would be too much to ask, I know) , 'cos:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')raditionally, Knecht Ruprecht would sometimes be portrayed as being Black African, like Zwarte Piet

So, Bas, is Black Pete still allowed in the Netherlands?

oh yes, black pete is still allowed in holland...I did make jokes about it being politically incorrect in the past but I have never heard about such concerns in the national media/political scene...

Christmass came from pagan traditions, and accepted due to monetary incentive.
