Plan Would Let Seniors Work to Pay Taxes

This poor fucking lady can barely walk, has arthritis and gets $620.00 per month social security check and they want her get a $7.00 per hour job to pay her $12,000 per year realestate tax. People are going to be so screwed in the VERY near future. The baby boomers start collecting next month. It's all over but the crying.

That's what I was thinking.

Plus, with less oil, that means less meds and worse hospital care (assuming education about health stays the same), then we'll live less anyway.

The US lifespan is going down. This is contrary to the bigger-better-all-the-time religion our country is built on, but lifespan, stature, things that indicate wellness are going down and have been for some time.

The great majority are not making it to the 67 years of age you need to achieve to collect your full SS benefits. I myself will feel lucky to make it past 60, and you can only collect partial benefits at something like 63 or 65.

The powers that be really want to see us live until about 50 and then kick the bucket.

Armegedden, did you read that article?

It said they WEREN'T going to have Grandma doing things like "running the snowplow" et. al. things that clearly required a younger person's strength or stamina.
The things they were speaking about were things like greeting folks, (reception/sitting job), or helping out with classrooms, like teacher's aids, retired lawyers help out with their skillset, retired accountants, etc. (although I think they'd have socked enough away to pay their taxes, those last 2).
It would be impractical and stupid to expect someone with a walker to get a burger and fries and have to hand it to you whilst making change through a window.

I employ some seniors, for part time jobs at the garden center and I have them do things like run cash registers, water, unload racks of flowers (not hard work, they can take their time), and I pay them about 7-9.00 depending on what their time was with the company and how talented and dependable they are.

Some are very good, and one lady didn't make it past 1-1/2 hours last season. I did a payout of the register and let her go, she wanted to get a refill at McDonald's on her "big drink" down the road from our store. She was already 1/2 hour late showing up her first day, didn't want to learn the cash register~which I HIRED her to do, and behaved badly. Some are good and some are not so good. Her former employment (her career which she retired from) was public relations for an airline carrier out of Chicago.
She wanted to "play" with the flowers, just not have to do any work. lol.

Another guy I hired was WONDERFUL! He showed up to work, never complained, did his job (he only wanted 20-25 hours or so a wk) and picked up his check. He worked for the City of Chicago during his work career. He found out he had cancer, and was going for experimental treatment. If he did not feel well, someone else stood in his place. We babied him too, when it got hot out. (we don't exactly have air-conditioning at the garden centers).

Don't discount seniors, who may want to work a little bit, and still have alot to give. You'll get there quick enough if you're so lucky to survive the dieoff.

With seniors getting to the point of using walkers, etc. there is no way that they should realistically be in a home by themselves. It is too dangerous for them, without supervision. Also, they cannot maintain the structural necessities like gardening, home maintenance, painting, etc. Those days should be over for them.

It would be nice to eliminate the need FOR paying those homeowner taxes which SHOULD be paid by those that need them, a younger working family. We should have good group homes that are not piss-palaces for those alone, those seniors that are able bodied and require minimal housekeeping.
I know they exist, but they basically will eat up the savings in no time. Then, the Senior has to go to the State poor house for seniors where they do not last as long. Poor food, abuse, neglect.

We are going to have to deal with these issues rapidly. Unless the dieoff happens first. I am in this bunch, so it's something I think about...

Unless she is living in a caslte, we would she be paying $12,000 a year in property taxes in the first place?

Also, with the declines in property values, will it be so easy to get a reverse mortgage in the future?

I don't think it will be that easy once the banks go down, however, there will always be people that will be willing to loan "something" out. Always was, always will be. I wouldn't want to see the percentage rate on that loan/extortion.

I wondered about that tax bill too. She may have a lot of land, in which case, I wonder why she didn't sell a few acres off?

I understand that, but her old ass shouldn't be working for $7.00 per hr just to pay her real estate tax. Why is it $12,000 per year anyway ? My $450,000 house is only $5,500 per year and it has gone up from $3,000 from back in 1999. I only paid $260,000 for it 10 years ago. I am sure it went down in value a little recently. The house across the street just sold for $525,000 this summer, and it is comparable. Dumb sob's.

How about not TAXING the old lady.

That's actually not a bad idea. Once you reach a certain age, your property taxes should be exempt until you die. Then when your children inherit the property, the taxes resume.

Tommy you make FAR too much sense!!

Blukatzen - maybe those old fucks should be just ground up for cat food, right?

I guess if I were that old lady, I'd either (a) take out a reverse mortgage so I could live in the place until I croak then who cares what happens to it, or (b) arm up and see how many jackbooted thugs I could take out before they get me.

Of course (b) always shows up in any summing-up I do!

I can't help you with that one, I would assume it is probably the sum total of back taxes. If that is the case, she should have been through a sheriff's sale already. (not that I'd want to SEE that happen, I am just saying what is par for the course for anyone.)
I am wondering why there isn't a "circuit breaker" for these taxes anyway.
I agree, you'd think that they'd paid into the system for so long, they should be getting some kinds of tax relief by now.

But again, as I had stated, we don't have the full story, so I believe it's kind of misleading until you DO have all the facts.

I know my Aunts/Parents never paid anything like that and we're in Chicago. Not NYC, but not low taxes by any means, either.

No, not at all, but unfortunately, the seniors seem to get an awful lot of it in their diet.

Did you see that tiger that was shot at the San Francisco Zoo? I'm SURE it was coming for you!

In my country there is no real estae tax. As a result 1 sq. m of an average condo equals 4-5-6 months of an average month pay. There are old people who get $80-90 a month and they live in 500-700-1000K condos. Since in US a lot of local expences comes from RE taxes, how about YOU to pay 50-70% more than you do now. And let the old lady live out her days in her $1M house.
By the way I know one old lady who makes $100 a month , has a small house with 1 acre of land where she lives and gardens, and has $400K condo which stays closed in the city. Noone has lived there for 15 years or so. She doesnt have any kids and constantly complaining about small pensions/expensive food/drugs /ets.

So what?

They paid for the condos. They own them. What business is it of yours?

You sound like they shouldn't have the right to own their property simply because it has a high market value and they don't have high incomes.

Christ.

Have the friggin' decency to wander off into the woods and DIE already when you're no longer able to be a contributor to society (and NO, greeter-at-Walmart is NOT contributing, sorry)...

And I urge 'em to go out with a bang, take out a bunch of banksters/mortgage sharks/used car salesmen/illegal immigrants with a beltful of explosives. Or a subtle whiff of phosgene. Or your ex-hubby's old deer rifle, whichever will bring back warm memories :) and light your way to Valhalla!

I can think of all kinds of quasi professions that really add no value to society, though they derive an income.

For starters, what about all the bureaucratic jobs in the government that only administrate other levels, those who actually do the work?

Then there are bail bondsmen, Playboy models, FEMA administrators, nail and tanning salon staff, most everybody working for Halliburton, including Dick Cheney. The list may go on and on!

Property tax is a big part of the current economic meltdown heading our way. Local governments do everything they can to promote higher property values so they can get more tax revenues. Duh. Why not jack up everyone's assessment and then make them work it off if they can't pay? Good scam!

Why should my taxes go up because my neighbor sold his house for a highly inflated price that the city assessor deemed fair? We need to switch to a membership fee or a pay as you go system. Or tax property based on size, not market value. You have more land, you pay more for services. There must be a better way than the obviously corrupt system currently in place.
Civilization is a personal choice.
