Plan Would Let Seniors Work to Pay Taxes
This poor fucking lady can barely walk, has arthritis and gets $620.00 per month social security check and they want her get a $7.00 per hour job to pay her $12,000 per year realestate tax. People are going to be so screwed in the VERY near future. The baby boomers start collecting next month. It's all over but the crying.
Armegedden, did you read that article?
It said they WEREN'T going to have Grandma doing things like "running the snowplow" et. al. things that clearly required a younger person's strength or stamina.
The things they were speaking about were things like greeting folks, (reception/sitting job), or helping out with classrooms, like teacher's aids, retired lawyers help out with their skillset, retired accountants, etc. (although I think they'd have socked enough away to pay their taxes, those last 2).
It would be impractical and stupid to expect someone with a walker to get a burger and fries and have to hand it to you whilst making change through a window.
I employ some seniors, for part time jobs at the garden center and I have them do things like run cash registers, water, unload racks of flowers (not hard work, they can take their time), and I pay them about 7-9.00 depending on what their time was with the company and how talented and dependable they are.
Some are very good, and one lady didn't make it past 1-1/2 hours last season. I did a payout of the register and let her go, she wanted to get a refill at McDonald's on her "big drink" down the road from our store. She was already 1/2 hour late showing up her first day, didn't want to learn the cash register~which I HIRED her to do, and behaved badly. Some are good and some are not so good. Her former employment (her career which she retired from) was public relations for an airline carrier out of Chicago.
She wanted to "play" with the flowers, just not have to do any work. lol.
Another guy I hired was WONDERFUL! He showed up to work, never complained, did his job (he only wanted 20-25 hours or so a wk) and picked up his check. He worked for the City of Chicago during his work career. He found out he had cancer, and was going for experimental treatment. If he did not feel well, someone else stood in his place. We babied him too, when it got hot out. (we don't exactly have air-conditioning at the garden centers).
Don't discount seniors, who may want to work a little bit, and still have alot to give. You'll get there quick enough if you're so lucky to survive the dieoff.
With seniors getting to the point of using walkers, etc. there is no way that they should realistically be in a home by themselves. It is too dangerous for them, without supervision. Also, they cannot maintain the structural necessities like gardening, home maintenance, painting, etc. Those days should be over for them.
It would be nice to eliminate the need FOR paying those homeowner taxes which SHOULD be paid by those that need them, a younger working family. We should have good group homes that are not piss-palaces for those alone, those seniors that are able bodied and require minimal housekeeping.
I know they exist, but they basically will eat up the savings in no time. Then, the Senior has to go to the State poor house for seniors where they do not last as long. Poor food, abuse, neglect.
We are going to have to deal with these issues rapidly. Unless the dieoff happens first. I am in this bunch, so it's something I think about...
Blu
I understand that, but her old ass shouldn't be working for $7.00 per hr just to pay her real estate tax. Why is it $12,000 per year anyway ? My $450,000 house is only $5,500 per year and it has gone up from $3,000 from back in 1999. I only paid $260,000 for it 10 years ago. I am sure it went down in value a little recently. The house across the street just sold for $525,000 this summer, and it is comparable. Dumb sob's.
