Diary Of A Supertramp

Yep, Supertramp LOL! Has nothing to do with the band, it's an autobio by an English fellow written about 100 years ago, and free online.

It's an interesting look at life for the down-and-out, the working poor, homeless, beggars, etc living in what were called "lodging houses", a kind of Down And Out In Paris And London, by a literary nobody. So it's not quite as fun to read as Orwell, but it's worth it.

Motorcars are only mentioned one or twice, bicycles a few times and I think they were penny-farthings, and apparently the way a lot of people of the poorer classes got around was simply by walking.

I think Revi would enjoy reading it, maybe Tommy Jefferson, PMS of course, a few who really seem to have internalized that our future is going to become quite Dickensian.

Got a link, Plants?

Thanks, sounds interesting, I may look it up. I bet that's where the band got the name.

Jack London wrote a book about his life as a hoboe in North America. Quite an interesting read called "The Road".
In 1902 he also spent a few months in East London "as if" homeless (he had a room to retreat to when he felt bad). It's called "The People of the Abyss", a very interesting read about the harshness of working class life then. I believe London was one of George Orwell's favourite writers. I wonder if he got the Down and Out idea from London?

London's works are available online:

Scroll down to "NON-FCTION" for those books.

Got a link to "Diary Of A Supertramp"?

Yes the band took its name from WH Davies' book.

Davies apparently became a successful writer and poet. Horray for him!

Here's the URL - this was NOT easy to re-find

Aha! I had just found it via Google. The exact title is The Autobiography of A Supertramp.
Looks interesting, will give it a try.
