Political compass: Self labeling

Unread postby johnmarkos » Wed 02 Feb 2005, 23:21:23

Peak oil is a complex issue that transcends traditional political boundaries. It would be instructive to know where list members stand on issues outside of oil depletion. Since labels like, "liberal," or, "conservative," tend to have different meaning in different places, we need a way to compare our opinions (more or less) objectively.

The test on Political Compass is useful in this regard. If you're game, please go to this site, take the test, and report your results. You can report your results in more detail in this thread.

I was on the edge between top right and bottom right when I took the test. I have taken it before and have since moved further down and to the left (more liberal). I'm still a fiscal Conservative {6.38} and a social moderate {1.23}. Both of which I'm proud of and would be willing to debate anyone on the merits of either.

PS. I accidently put a "8" and a ")" too close to eachother and they created a 8) . It doesn't really matter and I'm not sure why I mentioned it, but it seemed important 10 seconds ago when I typed the first part of this correction.

Actually, I fell exactly on the middle of the Authoritarian/Libertarian line but well Left on the economic side.

Maybe a clever peakoiler could put together a Peak Oil Compass with the two dimensions being __________ and __________. Or if you've got mad skills, you could make it in 3-D.

Phil, I'm pretty much in the same spot as you are--middle bottom left, between Mandela and Dalai Lama. Hummmm...not such a bad place to be, really! :)

Does that make me moderate? wtf? eh, I gotta do it again this can't be correct! I didn't treat the answers as a purist, but in accordance to the current situation. I think that might explain it.

Too many of those questions were double barrelled.

Now I begin to understand why I fail to agree with many lefties on some subjects - I've got a bit of a libertarian streak going. I don't feel a need to have others believe what I believe in unless it's something based on science, logic or real knowledge. Many very left-leaning people I know are probably much higher on the authoritarian scale.

George Bush, as an authoritarian, isn't very high on personal freedom scale if that's what libertarianism means. I see his ranting about freedom as bull$hit. It's very obvious that he wants everyone - from his cabinet to his party to the citizens, to do his wishes, and does not tolerate dissent.

Is it impossible to be in the lower right quadrant? Seems to be vacant territory!

...not surprised. I think I'd be more libertarian, but I answered some questions in the context of "what would I want in this society," not "what would I want if society was the way I wanted it." Like "agreeing" that the death penalty should be available for the worst crimes (though only agreeing under certain circumstances) and disagreeing that going against military action that defies international law is justifyable (because while I believe that the world would be best without governments and law, I believe that as long as governments exist, they absolutely should regulate themselves). And I would seem authoritarian for disagreeing that there are no such things as civilized and savage peoples, unless it was made clear that I don't necessarily consider being "civilized" to be a good thing.

im pretty much an ultra left wing on economic issues, but many would cnosider me very right wing on moral issues as i take the view of the catholic church on all moral issues.

therefore, im both left and right wing.

Hardly surprising, the results so far...

Peakoilers tend to be libertarian lefties, because those who believe in authority think that peak oil can't be an issue, or the government would be doing something about it. And they are likely to think that the current economic system is pretty much responsible for the mess, so they'd like to put constraints on it.

For those economic right-wing peakoilers, how do you justify free market in view of the mess it's got us in? Or do you believe that the economic system has nothing to do with peak oil?
