State of the Union speech.

General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

State of the Union speech.

Anybody out there want to make any predictions as to what we can expect to hear from Dubya tonight?

I wonder what he'll say regarding energy policy.

Might place a bet on how many times the word freedom will be used.

My guess? 25

LOL  Come on it will be way more than that!!

I cannot see the point of these speeches, Bush never actually says anything of any substance.

It's always generalised rubbish about freedom , democracy , la la la la etc

Frustrating !

True.

It will be just another propaganda speech. I just love listening to what he says in case he drops any big hints about invading Iran or North Korea.

it's an american tradition that has lost relevance to the same proportion that we have lost participants in the voting process, and for the same reason.

i won't watch it because i believe it's 100% smoke and mirrors and little if any actual useful information about his plans for the future.

i'm looking to 2008 because i think Bush and his croneys are starting to lose support from their Republican base, some of which is happening over his proposed changes to social security. they don't want to lose the power bloc in the next election. i'm hoping dean can catalyze the democratic party and that they can offer a candidate who can win the national vote.
what, me worry?

Dean? 8O

The reason the Democrats keep losing is people like Howard "The Scream" Dean. You need someone from the South who has some Conservative "Family Values." This can slow the bleeding in rural counties enough to allow city voters to win the day for the Dems.

The other option for a Democratic victory is a recession. Pick a Mid West Populist (Gephardt or someone like him) and play off everything as Bush's fault. Use your Midwesterner to get back blue-collar folks in Iowa, Ohio, and Missouri. This will balance out the possible loss of non-socialist suburbanites in places like Florida, and New Hampshire.

The only other option is a full blown attack on Florida and a hope that demographics won't change enough to make the Repubs pick up another Mid West state like Wisconsin or Michigan

But none of this matters if the GOP crucifies itself on the Social Security Cross. Fighting too hard for private accounts will turn off normally Conservative 50-year-olds who are worried about retiring with full benefits, knowing that they can't save enough money between now and retirement to make up the difference.

Peak Oil may change this, but assuming status quo for the next 4 years, that's the basic dogma.

This is mostly true, but I think speeches like this give out hints about what kind of criminal shit is about to be executed. Once you learn how to convert the bullshit language into English, it is much more clear.

If social security is mentioned, then the peasants will continue getting robbed at a faster pace. If freedom and democracy is mentioned, more foreign people will be killed pretty soon. If national security is mentioned, your chances of getting arrested and beaten will increase.

The only reason I won't be watching it is because there is more applause time than actual talking, much like how there is more commercial time than the actual program. One thing I'd like to see is a British-style show, where the speaker gets heckled heavily. From what I've seen, government people, and American citizens in general, do not like criticism of any kind, so everything turns out to be sterile and dull.

Occasionally the BBC also televises these commons select commitees, basically a minister sits at one end of table surrounded by MP's from all parties who grill him/senseless about all their policies. The minister in question (including PM) have to be on the ball as the questions are not known in advance.

Probably one of the few political processes I have respect for, makes them earn their money!

I'd love to see GWB grilled in this way, he'd be crying for his mum within 10 minutes !

Dream on, it'll never happen. Remember, King George doesnt even admit to ever having made a mistake - why would he open himself up to others so blatantly pointing all of them out?

Excellent speech...

Bet ya a buck Karen wrote that... she rocks.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Decent delivery. He managed to not invent any new words tonight, which was good. Announced plans to invade several new countries. I can't imagine why.

What else? F@#king up Social Security, cutting 150 programs, big spending on the war front... the usual bullshit.

On the whole it was just one of those things. Another day in paradise. He did say a couple things I was in agreement with. No buying or selling of human life, so I'm going to assume that means slavery will not be introduced.... good.

What else? Oh, opening our southern border further, not so good.

That about wraps it up for this lame-duck president. The sooner he's gone the better.

Looking forward to flushing my vote down the bitbucket again soon.

SOSDD

Alot of proposals that will never go forward, leaving the US in a static state. Personally I Like the idea of reforming social security, If up to me I would can it but, at this point in the ponzi scheme you can't leave the old folks to starve. It was moving that he brought the Marines mother in, just a crying assed shame that the mess wasn't taken care of in `91 when it would have been easy. Lastly I wasn't impressed

Keep the demons down
And drag the skeletons out
I got a blind man followin' me in chains
I said he's fun to watch
When the world has stopped
An i think he's got somethin' to say

Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!

Forgot about it, actually. Was on a call with the town rescue unit. I don't have a television anyway, so I couldn't have watched it if I wanted to (which I didn't.) I care nothing for bush.

I turned it off at the first smirk...I'd rather reads the pundits copy than watch that cretin in action.
