The TOD analysis of the latest EIA data would indicate that Dr B's prediction curve is pretty well accurate .... so far. Its early days and if peak has been and gone then I dont think theres enough of a view in the mirror to be sure yet.

I wonder how much longer this T1 will last before the troubling times of T2 begin. I think a watershed moment will come for America when Mexico stop selling us oil and the 'go juice' starts flowing in the other direction. I think we could easily see $150 to $300 oil before 2010 accompanied by full scale shortages and WWII levels of rationing.

I've been wondering the same thing Novus. At some point there will be a defining event, be it natural or man made, which will undeniably point to the fact that oil production does not meet demand and the decline going forward will be unmanageable without serious consequence to economies and nations. While we may be past the peak number now, for me, this "event" will be the real Peak. It will be where mankind realizes we are up the creek without a paddle. That sums it up nicely for me.

So far I still believe we have a while before we have anything resembling an "event" which brings Peak Oil bursting through the surface in an undeniable way.

Could the next major storm to hit the XOM be a trigger? Look at how the prices reacted to that storm just now. True, they were helped by the Fed basically euthanising the dollar this week, but I expect something involving Mexico to really hit the US and then, by extension, the world.

The only other foreseeable event would be hitting Iran, which I can't say I see coming any time soon, if ever.

Samsam Bakhtiari

Unread postby Leanan » Fri 23 Nov 2007, 08:54:45

I don't have any official confirmation of this, but someone posted last night at TOD that Samsam Bakhtiari has passed away. He said he heard the sad news from Mr. Bakhtiari's brother.

I predict that some of the tinfoil hat people will say that the assassination order came down to silence him because he blabbed too much about the oil situation.

Bakhtiari is among my top three favorite analysts: Deffeyes, Campbell and he, among the old-timers.

He brought a palpable dignity to the "doomer" vision: his message was that catastrophic change is coming and we should choose to take it like adults.

He has what I think is the best moment in End of Suburbia:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')God does set his own limits. I believe he likes to test human kind from time to time. And I think the test is going to come very, very soon."

Listening to Bakhtiari, one could almost feel good about embracing the change that is to come. This isn't doomerism so much as maturity.

Seeing that he has died, and seeing the newest raft of "skeptical" arguments (actually denialist articles) against peak oil, I grow more convinced that, while the peak oil argument has been won, the peak oil CAUSE is lost.

We're still arguing about WHETHER peak oil is coming. But Bakhtiari notable told us that "the modeling phase is over."

He drew vicious attacks from frothers (who shall remain nameless), I think because his vision was so bracing: We most decidedly could not have our cake and eat it too.

Who is going to fill his shoes?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ali Samsam Bakhtiari', '[')T]here is no time left to prepare public opinion for 'Post Peak' sequels. The shocks will first surprise, then jilt, and finally entangle swaths of people worldwide. Those better prepared will be less inclined to react in a disorderly way and panic when the shocking truth will be unveiled.

He had a lot of nerve considering his situation and lack of support among his peers.

It's sad that he only saw the beginning of the PO downslope. I expect he could have become very well known in just a few more years.

That's sad news. I had a lot of respect for Dr. Bakhtiari, and I had hoped to meet him at ASPO-USA 2006 in Boston, where he was invited to speak, but was unable to attend due to visa issues. He was a good man.

Anybody else thinking: "Lucky bastard. Getting out before it gets rough."? Or just me?

Can't have been easy, having the knowledge he had, coming from the country he came from. History is likely to prove him right. Sadly most of the other peak oil grandees don't have many years left.
