The number of people utilising the internet, as well as total traffic over the internet, as well as the number of websites grows each year.
So it's possible that your private stats show more and more visitors to your site, while you are in fact reaching less and less of the total number of users on the net, or less and less of its general traffic - because the total number of users/traffic is growing faster than the number of people that visit your site.
That's why Alexa is so interesting. It's this kind of exposure and reach rates that people look at when they acquire websites.
To measure the real success of a site, you should measure it against the growing number of websites and people on the net and total traffic.
