Peakoil.com and EnergyBulletin.net have peaked

Unread postby lorenzo » Wed 21 Nov 2007, 22:48:47

It seems like both Peakoil.com and EnergyBulletin.net have peaked. Traffic has been consistently down throughout 2007, despite ever increasing oil prices.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

When the debate was about when oil would peak, maybe it was more fun than when we realize it HAS peaked, and the consequences have been....sheeple signing up for more house than they can afford?

The two being undoubtedly related....like....say.....9-11 and the faked moon landings?

We peaked about the same time as global oil supplies. Oh well, now we are historians, not prophets. Maybe not as interesting to talk to.

I still think that this site is the best one on the internet.

The Oil Drum may have stolen some of our fire.

It's not as interactive as this site. You can comment on stories, but it's not the same.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Reach measures the number of users. Reach is typically expressed as the percentage of all Internet users who visit a given site. So, for example, if a site like yahoo.com has a reach of 28%, this means that of all global Internet users measured by Alexa, 28% of them visit yahoo.com. Alexa's one-week and three-month average reach are measures of daily reach, averaged over the specified time period. The three-month change is determined by comparing a site's current reach with its values from three months ago.

Don't know about Alexa. LATOC is currently averaging 10,700 visits a day. Last year it averaged about 5,700. So traffic is close to double what it was last year but according to Alexa it's down or about the same.

Yes, but this is so because Alexa calculates the reach of your site on the basis of the share it has amongst all internet users.

The number of people utilising the internet, as well as total traffic over the internet, as well as the number of websites grows each year.

So it's possible that your private stats show more and more visitors to your site, while you are in fact reaching less and less of the total number of users on the net, or less and less of its general traffic - because the total number of users/traffic is growing faster than the number of people that visit your site.

That's why Alexa is so interesting. It's this kind of exposure and reach rates that people look at when they acquire websites.

To measure the real success of a site, you should measure it against the growing number of websites and people on the net and total traffic.

Alexa data is based on those people that have the Alexa search bar or plugin installed. Not exactly an objective view of site traffic.

As an FYI, both AdAware and Spybot mark Alexa as spyware. Many people delete it for that reason.

I would take these stats with a large amount of sodium chloride.

True, but it's a statistically significant number of people that allow Alexa to make very precise extrapolations.

Alexa is used by many web marketeers to measure the real success of sites.

At least, they use it to quickly check things out. Dedicated services offer more detail, but the general picture often remains the same.

Also, the logic of Peak Oil education, or even its mainstream exposure resulting in a lowering of visits to this site may be false.

I believe that as more people figure it out they will enter into denial and NOT come to this site to find out more. Or, they will not enter into denial, their knowledge about the subject will grow to the point where they no longer need to know more about Peak Oil and instead move on to figuring out what to do about it.

I, and others, have progressed in the same fashion.
Exposure, Discovery, Enlightenment, Acceptance, and Action.

If I am figuring out how the heck to do with Peak Oil, I certainly don't need this site anymore nor do I need energbulletin.net
It would be like describing the water while everyone is drowning. I need to know how to deal with it, and the debate of peak is no longer in question, we have moved past that.

This is a lesson in percentages.

The Alexa numbers are basically saying that the rest of the internet has more share of the traffic than PO. It doesn't tell you traffic values for the sites. An analogy would be market share vs market cap for a business. Market cap could double but still be less of the total market due to growing GDP.

The internet has grown exponentially over the past few years and PO has done well keeping its share. 0.001% of the entire internet ain't too shabby. That means that 10 of every 1 million hits goes to this site alone.

PO.com is fast losing it relevance. It is becoming populated with 911 wackos, "uberdoomers", die off fantisizers, etc. Where did rockdoc go? The noise is drowniing out the signal. I suspect my days on this site are limited as well. it's become a waste of time.

In absolute numbers newsboard stories get more reads more quickly than they used to a year ago, or even only 6 months ago..Yet, still not very many, considering the ever widening internet population. Even the reading rates of most popular stories are negligeable in that respect.

Back in 2005 we had some great discussion. Lots of great threads archived Best of Monte for example.

There are only so many times you can beat a dead horse, now it's time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of our prophecy.

Long way to go, but I have a feeling that I will be using the following phrase quite often.

"I told you so"

You have no idea how stupid back in 2004-05 the claim of $100 oil sounded, "the experts" were talking about $25-$30.

As for the 911 or any other threads.

*drumroll*

No one forces you to read or participate in any thread except the ones you like.

Maybe many of the 'old hands' of peakoil.com are now well an truely into the acceptance phase of the grief process and have become spectators rather than those looking for answers and solutions.

Rockdoc chimed in a couple of weeks ago.

We've peaked? But the OOIP has increased. How many of these new users are P1?
