Interesting Idea, Using a Generator as a Heater-

Unread postby Kylon » Fri 16 Nov 2007, 03:16:02

What if you took a generator, and generated electricity with it, but also used it to heat your home?

I mean, generators are only like 50% efficient at most. In this case the waste heat would be used to heat your home during the Winter. This would mean that you'd produce large amounts of cheap electricity, which you could sell back to the power company, and because they only get about 50% efficiency with their generators, you might be selling energy at a lower cost.

So with soaring energy bills, you might be able to pay for your own fuel oil with the profits from the energy you sell.

What do you think?

Nice idea, that is exactly what the US Science station at the South Pole does. They use large diesel generators to make electricity for the base and they use the waste heat from the engines and exhaust systems to heat the base. They also have emergency heat in the form of oil furnaces which can also run on the diesel fuel if the waste heat from the generators isn't quite enough, but they have not had to use them yet despite being in the coldest place on Earth.

Antarctica's new station

The link has an interactive diagram of the new south pole station.

One would need to be certain that there exists no chance of CO poisoning due to leakage in the heat exchanger.

One of the best setups I've seen of this type ran the exhaust through a radiator immersed in a water bath. Another radiator collected heat by forced air or radiators. This setup minimizes the possibility of CO exposure and provides hot water as well.

It's called "cogeneration" and can be cost effective if the electric production and most of the heat are used. A good way to not waste the "waste" heat from an engine that is driving a generator.

I know some areas in Switzerland use waste heat from nuclear power plants to heat things. This is still an excellent idea. If you had a small enough wattage, you could just power your house and at the same time heat it. You would want safety to be number one concern or you might never wake up. CO kills lots of people.

AFAIK every professionally installed home generator is outside the living area, usually in a small stand alone enclosure. Routing the cooling water into the building is not difficult, and placing a heat exchanger around the exhaust if you take that additional step would also keep the exhaust gasses seperate from the liquid exchange medium.

I think we may be talking about do it your selfers here. That's why it's important to pound home the danger involved.

Now if we were on the population reduction thread we could just tell the nimrods to just run the genset indoors and avoid the hassle of heat exchangers. Disclaimer: Don't do this!!!
