$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ShinyOldLady', 'A')ny home brewers out there want to share their experiences?

It's a lot of damn work.

Opium provides similar mind alteration to a drug like alcohol at lower cost.

If your financial situation affords you the luxury of paying someone else to produce your alcohol, I would recommend that.

If not, you are going to have to work hard to produce your own alcohol.

Making home-brewed beer is extremely simple. Even I could do it as a teenager.

Disclaimer: I made ales. I think lagers are harder to make because the yeast is different.

I made some very nice Hard Apple Cider last fall. It's actually harder to keep apple cider from becoming hard. If you really mess it up, you end up with vinegar which is also useful.

I use vodka for my tinctures, Everclear is not sold in Canada.

I can buy absinthe here, though. Weird.

Making beer is fun but messy. Do it outside if you can so you can just spray the area down with a garden hose when your done. It's not hard but like others have said, it just takes a little practice. Start with the malt in the can kits so you can get the process down first. We can't talk about the hard stuff... that's illegal ya' know... at least in the US.

That's a kind offer but I have gotten used to just using the vodka. I just steep them a little longer.

Thank you anyway. :)

No beer, obviously you live in a cold climate you haggis.
In Australia we NEED beer at least 9 months a year. (Except fart north where the absolute minimum is round 327 d/y)
Scotch (single malt of course) should be limited to winter months and after 5PM (but not later than 9AM) when the weather cools down.
That reminds me, I better stock up on Lagavulin before the shipments end....

I noticed this when I was looking at beer yesterday.

I normally buy a 30-pack of Busch in cans for about $16 when it is on sale. Having grown up near St. Louis, I can tolerate Busch. Yesterday the sale price was something like $19.49. When you looked closely at the sale tag on the shelf, you discover that this is a whopping 10 cents savings over the new regular price. Whoop-de-doo.

Looking around the store, that seemed to be a trend. The sale price vs. normal price is shrinking and the prices are rising.

In talking to some fellows who run a smaller regional brewery, I found that the scrap value of kegs is apparently much more than the deposit that the wholesalers or distributers are willing to charge their customers. So, a barrel that costs $90 to $120 for the brewer, is given to a customer with a $20 deposit, and the stainless steel is worth $40 to 60 scrap. For some smaller breweries it is a major expense.

duplicate post deleted

Even the price of home-brewing ingredients is going up, especially hops.

I see more home pressed hard cider in my future.

Just paid €7.79 for a 12-pack (€8.99 minus 1.20 bottle deposit).
That's 12 x 33cl = 3.96 litres, about 8 large beers.

€1.967 per litre while 95-octane gasoline averages 1.35. I wonder how much the beer will go up as gasoline does, but one day the price per litre might be the same.

Don't believe it - Shiner Bock was $4.99/6-pk. this weekend at Spec's.
...a whole dollar cheaper than I've ever seen it.

Didn't matter though, as I went there specifically for this:

The cheapest possible beer in Ireland cost €1 per bottle.

€1 is about $6,500 US I think or at least it will be in about 6 months time.
