My husband recently had to do some crane-operator training. He works in the oil patch, and apparently now he's going to have to operate a crane occasionally. It won't be on the scale of the ones you're referring to, PMS, but still there is some associated risk. He already has to contend with long hours on the highway in all kinds of weather, H2S wells and being isolated outdoors in the wilderness, so it's just one more occupational risk.
Regarding demolition derbies, we still have them here in Alberta in some of the smaller towns. I'd like to take my sons to one. When my youngest son was a little boy, his favorite book was Smash Up, Crash Up Derby, by Trey Seymour, I think. I couldn't tell you how many times we borrowed that book from the library.
