Crane Accidents

There seems to be a lot of these
Somehow they seem to epitomize the modern world. I was amused by the one at the bottom where the big truck spilled all the apples. Well, amused in a Demolition Derby way. The one where the crane ruined the freeway over-pass was pretty good too. btw, those old Demolition Derby events have pretty much bit the dirt. I use to like those things in the 60s.

I can't even raise a smile there. About 5 weeks ago I had one of those crane accidents at my house - by a company which the day previously had sent one of its cranes tumbling over the side of the Tasman Bridge over the Derwent.

Do not like cranes. *shudder*

That must have been unpleasant. To me, what they represent is hubris. And all the rest of what we built in the last 100 years or so. We drive around like prosthetic gods in our own little versions of those behemoth machines, only with air conditioning and all the nice trappings.

My husband recently had to do some crane-operator training. He works in the oil patch, and apparently now he's going to have to operate a crane occasionally. It won't be on the scale of the ones you're referring to, PMS, but still there is some associated risk. He already has to contend with long hours on the highway in all kinds of weather, H2S wells and being isolated outdoors in the wilderness, so it's just one more occupational risk.

Regarding demolition derbies, we still have them here in Alberta in some of the smaller towns. I'd like to take my sons to one. When my youngest son was a little boy, his favorite book was Smash Up, Crash Up Derby, by Trey Seymour, I think. I couldn't tell you how many times we borrowed that book from the library.
