Studying Mathematics

That last class I took in number theory was a mind bender. I'm glad I did it, but man, it hurt. I wish I was as smart as jason.

I did get an 'A' but I suffered a lot to get it. Mathematical geniuses have my envy.

Your probably far smarter than Jason.

Jason would rather suck a dick than do number theory

btw, why are we having conversations about Jason, when Jason wasn't around.

So if a guy is looking to add a book or two on practical math for their library, would there be any recommendations?

I'm thinking geomtry, trig... other things real good for building and other practical applications.

math, of course. and jason, just kidding, your the best. anyone who could figure out the Rubic Cube at five years old is beyond comprehension. I don't know if you were just kidding but if you did then I am awestruck. Would that I was that intelligent. I don't have any desire to be more athletic or wittier or better looking. But I sure would like more intelligence. Not that I'm a dummy, but that is something I value very much.

I never seen the cube as being a challenge and I don't understand why people think it to be the be all end all. I think people view at as harder than it really is.

But, I am sure you are much smarter than me

that's kind of you to say so, but it's probably not true. Number Theory is the most fascinating subject I've ever studied btw. As I said, it hurt my head, but I was amazed by it nonetheless. To me, it far surpasses any other branch of mathematics in it's beauty.

I mentioned that I did well in that course, but that was where I really learned my intellectual limitations. I labored so hard and lamented my lack of intelligence.

I always loved math. Now when I look back at some of my notebooks that I had saved from my college days, I might as well be trying to read Sumerian. The strange thing that I remember is that I actually did much better with Trig and Calc than I did in Algebra and Differential Equations. I was very good at doing Calc, but I have to admit that it was at a mechanical level. I didn't understand what I was doing, but always ace'd every test and exam. My Calc professor tried to convince me to get my major in math, but by then I was too far down the Comp Sci road.

I think it would have helped me to have one of the math software packages that help you visualize the equation and how changes in coefficents alter the results, but those came out much later...

I don't do math at all The only math I ever do involves ballancing a checkbook and I rarely do that since I pay with cash for just about everything.

When I was highschool I could always get the right answer to a problem, but the teacher would go ballastic because I would never show my work, I would just solve it and move on. So he would take 2 -3 points off per problem and I barely got out of highschool

I just could never figure out all of the steps and rules and I always felt like I was being punished for knowing something.

I just never understood why you needed to take all of those damn steps if you could solve it by looking at it. Now I know there are some types of problems that can't be solved with out using solutions , like in algebraic number theory and trying to solve for fermat many values of 'n' of course then just gets disproven by Carmichael numbers but that is hardly important

You did so well but didn't understand. Somehow that seems like the perfect metaphor for how we got into this peak oil mess. Of course I'm not disrespecting you, lateStarter, but think about it. That's how we all got into this mess. Clever monkeys that we are. We can do math but we aren't so smart and we're going to pay for it.

No offense taken. I regret not getting a 'real' education.

I agree with you PMS. I had a Physics teacher one semester that spent his last day of class chastiz(s)ing us for working so hard to pass the test, but not really having any idea about what we were doing. I think it is a failing of the educational system in general. It is all about grades. Memorize. regurgitate, forget... (Repeat)...

Although it was only available to a privileged few in the past, I think that education in the past was much more concerned about producing people that could think critically and were much more well-rounded. I don't want to hijack your math thread. I know the state of the educational system has been discussed previously, so I'll stop there.

OTOH, I think that rather than focusing on advanced math skills in an attempt to get into a 'good' college, a better use of time and money would be to teach students basic skills like how to balance a checkbook. I guess that wouldn't help produce good consumers though!

My hat is off to anyone attempting to 'teach' mathematics to today's wannabe pop-star/idol.

In synthetic organic chemistry not much maths is needed.
So during my work I was perfectly happy with basic 4 arithmetic operations.
Exponential notation was used from time to time to deal with pH and similar other issues.

During my secondary school and university years a lot of efforts had been made to teach me more of that, but unfortunately it was mostly to no avail.
Bright side is that I can still remember RLC calculations.

BTW I could solve great majority of exercises from calculus, but I could rarely work out physical sense (if any) of such endeavor.
Probability theory was my favorite.
