that's kind of you to say so, but it's probably not true. Number Theory is the most fascinating subject I've ever studied btw. As I said, it hurt my head, but I was amazed by it nonetheless. To me, it far surpasses any other branch of mathematics in it's beauty.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('lateStarter', 'I') didn't understand what I was doing
You did so well but didn't understand. Somehow that seems like the perfect metaphor for how we got into this peak oil mess. Of course I'm not disrespecting you, lateStarter, but think about it. That's how we all got into this mess. Clever monkeys that we are. We can do math but we aren't so smart and we're going to pay for it.

No offense taken. I regret not getting a 'real' education.
I agree with you PMS. I had a Physics teacher one semester that spent his last day of class chastiz(s)ing us for working so hard to pass the test, but not really having any idea about what we were doing. I think it is a failing of the educational system in general. It is all about grades. Memorize. regurgitate, forget... (Repeat)...
Although it was only available to a privileged few in the past, I think that education in the past was much more concerned about producing people that could think critically and were much more well-rounded. I don't want to hijack your math thread. I know the state of the educational system has been discussed previously, so I'll stop there.
OTOH, I think that rather than focusing on advanced math skills in an attempt to get into a 'good' college, a better use of time and money would be to teach students basic skills like how to balance a checkbook. I guess that wouldn't help produce good consumers though!
My hat is off to anyone attempting to 'teach' mathematics to today's wannabe pop-star/idol.
