When I smoked I would roll one out of butt tobacco if that was all that was available . I started smoking when I was 13 and didn't always have money for cigs. That memory made me cry .Oh the humanity .

I'm amazed that there are still people in this world who regularly smoke cigarettes.

I could go on for pages about the dangers of smoking but I'll cut it down to this:

Cigarettes cost lots of money and they offer you absolutely nothing in return (except for lung cancer).

Why would anyone want to throw away thousands of dollars to fuel a health-destroying habit?

(So no, I don't smoke)

I'm with you Tyler, I'll never understand how someone can willingly suck something into thier bodies which is more than likely bound to kill them. At best you will suffer long term from it's effects.

Rather astounding since we know so much about how it's a true killer.

I smoke a Meershaum pipe once in awhile. I think it's one of the greatest lost pleasures. Remember the 50's? Peeps don't puff on the pipe anymore.

Nothing better than sitting in the easy chair next to the fireplace with my favorite drink, the dog at my feet & that sweet smell of good pipe tobacco in the air.

A very good remedy for bad nerves!

Who do you think subsidizes your medical costs?

Same reason I dislike chronic drug addicts, reckless drivers, compulsive gamblers, criminals, and the rest.

The irresponsible drive up the cost of living and lower the quality of life for everyone else.

I'm not saying smoking should be banned, I just think smokers should have to pay for the damage they do to society.

And yes, they do damage. Every years second hand smoke costs billions of dollars in lost wages and medical bills for people who have never smoked a cigarette in their lives.

I could have put a stop watch to that response.

Tell it to the children of the Congo.

I am sure they would like to know who is going to pay for the damage your consumptive ways have destroyed the planet.

Smug...just down right smug TC.

I used to smoke a pack a day for about 10 years. I quit a few years ago cold turkey. Glad I did it. First 5-6 weeks sucks. I'd suggest lots of fruit juice and maybe getting sleeping pills (had bad insomnia). After that point it becomes much easier. You only get urges maybe once a week, if that, which go away pretty quick. Once you get to about the 1 year point the urges are gone.

Weren't there studies that showed that chronic smokers die so much sooner that the lifetime medical costs were less than for non-smokers ? Living into your 80's and 90's is no picnic anyway when alzheimers, blindness, inability to walk etc are gonna get you.

I smoke maybe a pack's worth every 4 months. When I have them I smoke them so I just don't buy them and bum them off people at bars.

Why you all hung up on cigs?

Smoking a pipe is GREAT!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')instein, on the other hand, was very passionate about his pipe smoking. During one lecture, he ran out of pipe tobacco and borrowed some cigarettes from his students so he could crumple the tobacco into his pipe. "Gentlemen," he said, "I believe we've made a great discovery!" He later decided that his conclusion was premature. He realized that cigarette tobacco lacks the aroma, the fullness, and the taste of pipe tobacco. But what appealed most to Einstein was the entire ritual of pipe smoking: carefully choosing from a variety of pipes and tobaccos, delicately loading the briar, puffing and tamping, and the associated contemplation. "I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs," he said in 1950 at age 71, when he became a lifetime member of the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club.

Pipe smoking is a fun hobby. It is relaxing. It tastes good. It feels good. It helps us unwind. It helps us cope with stress. It enhances objectivity. It facilitates contemplation. People like Waxman and Kessler never mention these intangible benefits. They just want to know if the activity in question is "good for you" in a strict biological sense. If not, or if they think it is bad for you, they will attempt to outlaw it. This sort of reasoning would also support a ban on obesity, a requirement that all Americans exercise, the prohibition of junk food, limits on alcohol and caffeine consumption, and so on.

OuR tax money is used to sponsor anti-smoking propaganda--official hate speech from the state. Anti-smoking billboards and TV commercials are aimed at encouraging the average citizen to loathe smoking and, by implication, smokers. Several days ago, I was standing on a street corner in Santa Monica waiting for the light to turn green. A city bus with an anti-smoking message on the side passed by, spewing filthy exhaust fumes. I crossed the street and entered the Tinder Box, a tobacco shop that was founded when Calvin Coolidge was president. The aroma was magnificent. I chatted with the store's founder, Ed Kolpin, who has come to work every day since 1928. He was puffing on his pipe, looking very contented. Ed attributes his good health and long life to the sense of peace that 65 years of relaxed and intelligent pipe smoking have given him.

I do not directly suffer as a result of the damage done to Congolese children.

I'm sorry about the whole blood diamonds thing, that's why I have eliminated my personal consumption of diamonds (not that I consumed many of them to begin with. :))

I do suffer when the cost of American medical care goes up as a result of reckless behavior.

Again, if you want to smoke, have fun. I just don't believe I should be forced me to pick up the tab.

CDC report on the economic costs of smoking

440,000 premature deaths per year and $157 billion in economic losses.

Wait a minute...

Those 440,000 premature deaths do put a lid on population growth...free cigarettes for everyone?
