btw, maybe some of you mature adults would appreciate the amazing Geology lesson I tried to teach the kids. I'm here in San Diego. To my east is a range of mountains that stretches from Baja California to L.A. 6 thousand feet high in this vicinity though it gets higher up closer to L.A. Beyond that is a sea level valley. Right here in town we've got rocks that washed down a riverbed from central Arizona 20 million years ago. There was no mountain and there was no valley at that time. Ponder that.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Eli', 'G')osh, how do slide from reading to troubled kids to the apocalypse?

I am not criticizing just curious.
We've come a long way since I sent you that nasty picture of Hillary Clinton, Eli. These days it seems we're on the same page. But not entirely. It should be understood, I don't care if we stay "on topic." Any thread of mine is fair game for anything anyone wants to say. Btw, what do you think of Hillary as POTUS? And what the heck is wrong with the San Diego Chargers? They are supposed to be the best. I don't think so. The New England Patriots appear to be the powerhouse this year.

Another post before this goes down the memory hole. I was thinking as I was looking at these kids, "why are they in a psychiatric hospital?" They were not bright looking kids. I suspect, but I don't know, that they were all in Forrest Gump territory. But I don't think that's it. These kids have emotional problems. I saw them. But they were very receptive to my story reading. It may just be that their parents are fuck-ups who don't know how or care to love a child.

Mercurygirl, my portraits of the kids weren't caricatures. They were true portraits, done in the style I developed as an art student at UC Santa Cruz. Everyone has seen caricatures, but the kids liked the drawings I did of them because they were true. Nothing cartoonish about them.

PMS, that was me, not Mercurygirl. It wasn't my intent to diminish your portrait-drawing; I realize it takes much more skill to do a portrait than a caricature. Rather, I was just relating the reaction of the guests at my parents' party to the art (caricatures) presented to them. I would be delighted if someone decided to do a portrait of me.

If someone offered to feed, clothe, and manage your mentally retarded and/or mentally ill kid for free, wouldn't you say "Take him!"?

It would free up your personal time and resources for use purchasing things.

Been teaching high-school kids for 7 years, evening school. Kids were supposed to be problem kids, have been through the whole mill, school psychiatrists, family counseling, meds etc.

The students performance at high-school school improved dramatically after a few months of evening classes. I've seen kids go from D's to B's and A's.

We wondered why it was such a success and decided to ask some students.

Turned out that the school was such a success because the kids felt comfortable there. For them it was an escape from everyday harassment, a place where they were treated as normal human beings.

IMO the problem is that we have an army of shrinks, therapists, doctors, and social workers etc. out there who jump on every kid that is a little out of the ordinary and try to drPhil them. All encouraged by their loving parents.

It doesn't occur to them when you mentally turn a kid inside out and back again on a daily basis, it might have a negative impact on their behavior.

precisely. well done smiley. Btw, interestingly enough, the story I read to them was about a Chinese woman who had her feet bound and mangled as a child. Quite the metaphor, isn't it? Before I read it to them, I was a quiet stranger. After I read it they wanted to talk with me. It was a very nice day.

I'm beginning to genuinely feel that people are beginning to forget how to feel, how to truly think (not apply NeoCon Mental Filter v 1.21), and most frightening of all, how to love.

People haven't used some of their instincts for generations. The lights are off upstairs, and it's resulting in poor decisions (such as electing BushCo in twice -- if they were indeed elected). People are working longer hours in pointless jobs than they ever have. By the time they get home from work, their minds are too tired to think. And so they sit in front of the TV, and let it do the thinking for them.

They mindlessly consume propaganda and silently utter 'thankyou'. They are blindly led toward the slaughterhouse, unknowing the whole time. And they don't have time for the kids, so they plop them in front of the 'tube and let it do the parenting.

We can forget how to think to a certain extent, but if we forget how to love, the world will be one hell of a messed up place. Forgetting how to think and how to love will, I suspect, result in the end of modern civilisation.

And yes, I myself post sober. So if you think I'm insane, there it is. :P
