I hear the clock, it's 6am
I feel so far away from where I've been
Got my eggs, and my pancakes too
Got my maple syrup, everything but you
I break the yolks and make a smiley face
I kinda like it in my brand new place
I wipe the spots off of the mirror
Don't leave the keys in the door
Never put wet towels on the floor anymore 'cause

Dreams last for so long
Even after you're gone
I know, that you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you

Called my momma, she was out for a walk
She Consoled a cup of coffee but i didn't wanna talk
Picked up a paper, it was more bad news
More hearts being broken or people being used
Put on my coat in the pouring rain
Saw a movie it just wasn't the same
'Cause it was happy and I was sad
It made me miss you oh so bad

Dreams last for so long
Even after you're gone
I know, that you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you

BRIDGE: Go about my business, I'm doing fine
Besides, what would I say if I had you on the line
Same old story, not much to say
Hearts are broken every day

Brush my teeth and put the cap back on
I know you hate it when I leave it it right on
I pick up a book, Turn the sheets down
Take a deep breath and a good look around
Put on my pj's and hop into bed
I'm half alive but I feel mostly dead
I try and tell myself it'll be all right
I just shouldn't think anymore tonight

Dreams last for so long
Even after you're gone
I know, that you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you

So, it's about 18 months after the original post. Current trends suggest I was overly pessimistic about 2007 prices - still, Iran remains in play. And the hurricane season may add some interest.

You're no Cormac McCarthy. Few writers are, they say. Referring to his novel The Road of course. You'll want to settle back in a warm tub with some razor blades handy with that one.
Most post-apoc fiction pulls some serious punches, since the SF target audience is by and large - by defintion? - a bit more optimistic in outlook. The movie Threads and the book Warday are good views/reads though. There are a few more refs in the Media reviews forum. I remember a link there to a post-PO novel someone was writing.
This is about the effects of nuclear war on Charlottesville, Virginia.

Flying Dreams

Unread postby greenworm » Sat 08 Sep 2007, 19:32:28

Have you ever had a dream where you could fly? If so, please attempt to describe the actual method which allowed you to fly.

Ok before sleep imagine clouds and blue sky, birds, being weightless and of course flying. At first you may experience falling or even very uncontrollable flight yet with some practice you should be able to fly or float with some control. Google earth might be a decent tool 8)

Personally I was able to take off/launch like superman with one arm held forward and for many taking off is the hardest part.

Lucid dream

In my flying dreams I have wings. And I am not human.

Loads of fun, as my dreams are fairly detailed. I even 'feel' the air flowing past me.

I've only ever managed to levitate. That I found tricky enough! :) Maybe I'll try flying tonight...

Dreaming that you can fly is quite common, and for good reason.

It's been quite some time since I had such dreams, but I used to have vivid ones several times a year.

In the typical dream, I reached up and strained upward with all my strength, and liftoff was achieved. The heights and distances I achieved seemed to vary. Also, I had to keep "working at it" to stay up. Despite the effort needed to maintain flight, it was a highly pleasurable sensation, and I loved looking down at the passing scenery (for the same reason, when I fly in a plane, I have to have a window seat). (I haven't been on a plane in many years, but I used to fly on planes pretty often.)

It seemed incredibly real. I even remember debating with myself in my sleep over whether it was real or a dream, and on those occasions when I concluded it was real, I was practically in heaven. When I woke up and realized it wasn't real, hell resumed.

The connection is that, in the post-collapse future, dreaming will be the only way people can fly.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n my flying dreams I have wings. And I am not human.

Interesting, like Icarus man made wings or do you truly know that your arms are actual wings?
The reason I ask is that my arms behave like wings, a coordinated flap with much force propels me higher, but I just have arms and this is what I found odd.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')ersonally I was able to take off/launch like superman with one arm held forward and for many taking off is the hardest part.

That sounds like how you would do it.  You are the first person I thought of when starting this thread, just imagine lesser G and everyone doing the moon walk while some adapt and others fail. Remember your Bruce Lee quote, apply that to flying and the real innovation will come about. Hey, I just described the matrix fight scenes, interesting.

Yes, it was a struggle for me as well, but a manageable struggle. As gravity brought me down, a solid flap was needed to boost me up a bit. Very similar to swimming, inactivity results in dropping, but high activity, feet kickin arms paddling keeps me afloat.
Check out this launch pad.

In my dreams, when it's time to fly, I just kick off like jumping but I stay in the air and glide. Sometimes I'm just a few inches above the ground, like when I'm gliding down the stairs. In that case my fingertips just lightly brush the banister rail, which keeps me from flying higher, I think. Other times I'm a few feet off the ground usually to avoid the bad guys who are trying to grab my ankles!

Regards,

L.

They seems very much like bird wings, sometimes with an oddly 'jointed' sensation. Some part of me seems at odds with flying (even while asleep) as a person...so my mind finds a plausible creature, or something along those lines.

You can train yourself to recognize a dream state for what it is, a dream, without waking up as a result of this realization. In oher words, you know you are asleep and dreaming, but continue to dream. It gives you greater control over what goes on, and can be a valuable problem-solving tool. Lucid Dreaming
I've done it a few times, though mainly by accident.

Wow, you guys are way too weird for me! My flying dream was way more pedestrian. I dreamt that I stole a twin engine plane from an airport and was flying around in it very low to the ground.

I think this discussion relates to the psychology of people interested in peak oil. And this is an amusing topic...

Speaking of weird...

Myself
* I dream in color
* I am aware I am dreaming
* I remember my dreams
* Walking, running and flying is no trouble, I don't use wings I prefer to levitate/fly.
* I control as much as I want, the place, the landscape, the physics and I can create animated people.
* I can have a matrix style burly brawl, let trolls chop me up and reassemble myself. There's nothing in my dreams that can harm me.
* I can read, though I've heard most people have difficulty with this while dreaming.
* With difficulty I can pull up music and video in floating jukebox windows.
* The most difficult is to create a computer simulation with a working program compiler or math simulator.
* My worst dream is if I try to simulate growing fractals. In general exponential equations are a pain, you just run out of brain space...
