I don't hate you PMS, I worry about you. I worry about all the folks on this board who seem so upset and depressed when nothing bad is currently really happening to them, I worry how they will cope if/when things actually do go bad. I worry about their mental health. But it's very hard to tell when people are being serious on here or when they are just spinning scenarios for fun. I never know when to believe people or take them seriously here. I wonder how much time they spend dwelling on negative fantasies. Is it all a game? Do they believe it?

That's all. Sorry to be off-topic. Back to the doom!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', ' ')Threadbear at least still likes me. Don't you Threadbear? Every man wants to be liked by women, except maybe gg3. I know that's callous, but that's how I see it.

Hey, What's not to like? I mean, you can make your hearing aid squeal with desire, right? That's just so evocative and potentially seductive. Sigh. Too bad I'm married.

Thanks, ladies. "hearing aid squealing with desire" that's rich! Now I think I'll go back to the HOF NEO thread and find somebody to KTFO.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', ' ')I see that you have the impression whatever happens it's all about you.
Before I leave for the HOF, it's not that it's all about me. In fact it's quite the opposite. It's all about you and whoever I can connect with in this medium. I offer what I can and enjoy the interactions based on these connections. :)

No, Shanny. Real doom is the destruction of nature to the point where there is nothing left there worth connecting with. People---aah, there'll always been plenty of THEM around, to connect with or flee from, as the case may be.

I remember you posted about how you'd make sounds with your hearing aid when you were in school. I really did think that was very cool, that you would (a) do it and (b) admit to it. You are definitely an attractive man and I mean that sincerely

Well, if we were still connected to nature and each other as Shanny suggests, then we wouldn't currently be destroying our nest, right?

You know Jato had a heck of a post a few years back regarding why doomers are the way they are. Something to the effect the average doomer is someone who always has their spare tire inflated, knows how to use a fire extinguisher, keeps their hair cut short, perform CPR, etc.

All-round good person to have in a pinch.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Well, it looks as though this has petered out for now, with some flirting tossed in at the end for good measure. Some good posts in here. I hope the discussion continues, but when I get a chance I'll tally the responses and look for commonalities.

That's a nice idea, coyote---providing a summing up. Too many threads die out without rhyme or reason being made of them. They die with loose ends waving in the air.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') take these doomer scenarios very seriously and I do my best to stay cheerful knowing how we are all completely screwed. How do you like them apples?

Sounds to me like you've quit before arriving at the fight.

My definition of doom pretty much fits with a quick collapse of economies and the ability of the infrastructure to support the average person in a given area. This will of course lead to a great deal of chaos.

Am I in that mind set. To be honest, I vary. I have a hard time trying to sort out how I think it will all pan out, but I 'think I know' one thing. We don't have long before we start to find out.

All I can say is I hope to keep my thought process fluid and adaptable. Adaptation is what preserves a species and an individual after all. I hope to be a little lucky, a little good, a little smart, and a lot mentally tough. Should I not be up to the challenge, I still hope to get to meet my end face first and with courage in my heart. I don't know about you, but I don't plan to give up prematurely. Our society is not going to survive much longer as it exists today, that seems clear to me.

So suck it up, because thinking you are done is a self fulfilling prophecy.

Your comments reflect the ambiguity many of us feel about this dire subject, Olaf.

As a species, I don't think we can think our way out of this one. On the other hand, thinking and attitude may be very helpful for adaptable individuals for quite some time.

Ultimately fate has a way of zeroing in on individuals, no matter what they think or do. That truth comes through in McCarthy's "The Road." There will be one road, and it will lead to one place.

I agree with this sentiment completely. It is all very ambiguous. Sort of a; "What's coming? I don't know, but it's big" kind of deal. That of course makes it difficult to plan what to do.

In the big picture, I don't think we are going to be able to implement an adequate strategy to mitigate what will be some sort of standard of living and consumption decline; including a shrinking population. This will leave it up to pockets of individuals and small communities with the appropriate thought processes and attitudes to muddle their way through it all while trying to not be dead. Since we aren't quite sure what IT will be that needs muddled through, a positive (or perhaps resolute is better) attitude and flexibility will be good characteristics to have. My hope is that as a race, we reconnect with the idea that we are OF this world, not above it, and adjust our paradigms accordingly. I may live to see that, and I may not, but f*ck if I ain't gonna try.

One of my favorite quotes, unfortunately I don't know the source, is:

"Someone once asked me, 'Why do you insist on taking the hard road'?, and I replied, 'Why do you assume I see two roads'"?

1. Doom from biological point of view is a process of depopulation which may end in extinction. Dinosaurs had their doom, humans should expect their sooner or later.

Here Doom for me means that we aren't properly prepared, and we will face serious economic consequences. Recessions and depressions, soaring unemployment, feeling of personal safety will disappear, people will radicalize and some of the worst known behaviors which we only see in 3rd world will take place in our own backyard (often here painted as a 'horde of zombies'). Plus inflation, many goods and services will not be available, and rationing will happen. many enterpreneurs will go bankrupt and those with debt will often commit suicide.

NYSE will have hard days, marketing will die off, some corps will die. And so on. It's overheating economy by unnatural consumption.

2. Yes, I'm a doomer.

3. Because I think the sustainability cannot exist on this level of consumption. Especially on this management of society which is overproductive in crap, and drains more natural resources than ever.
Peak oil is only an indication and a premise of limits to growth on a finite planet.
Denial is the most predictable of all human responses.
