$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Nicholai', '"')Network" is one my favorites. I hope you enjoy these clips.

That's the third reference to "Network" I've heard in two days... I guess I should check it out...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Zardoz', '
')"Raging Bull" - DeNiro's best performance. Incredible movie.
Yes it was a great performance. But I think he was at his best in Cape Fear The last time I watched the DVD I watched the commentary. Juliette Lewis was talking about the thumb scene. It was not in the script and she warmed to it. DeNiro, she said, looked at her funny and walked away cold afterwards. She wasn't acting, he was.

One of the hippest flicks is Masked and Anonymous Besides some nice music, there's some pretty amazing dialogue and John Goodman was terrific.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Shawshank Redemption. Another great classic, one of the best of all time.
(In fact IMDB ranks it #2)

Submarine flicks tend to be great too. Nearly all of them.
-Das Boot
-Hunt for Red October
-U571
-K19 Widowmaker
-Crimson Tide

the oldies too:
-20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
-Enemy Below
-Torpedo Run
Remember: 73.3% of statistics are made up
and the other 23.6% are wrong

Braveheart
Shawshank Redemption

Bowfinger with Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy was hilarious

Dead Poets Society - Life changing for me when I saw it first aged 16.

Stop my ass is on fire with Azlea Anistasia gets an honourable mention.

The Field with Richard Harris (an Irish movie with global themes).

Among my favourites:
Shaun of the Dead
Serenity (after watching Firefly series in correct order)
Undead (2003)
Canadian Bacon (Wag the Dog ripped off the premise)
Wargames
3 Days of the Condor (coolest hacker-geek movie ever)
A Boy and His Dog
Duck Soup
Modern Times
The Great Dictator

And I'll +1 to:
Shawshank Redemption
Hunt for Red October
Laughs_Last

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Richard Harris is one of my favorite actors. Who can forget his performance in A Man Called Horse? I was 16 when I saw this and I'll never forget the scene where he taught the Indians to use European military tactics to defeat an attacking tribe.

I remember Fantastic Planet. It was basically, as I recall, a subtle protest against the rule of the Communist Party. I've ordered it and will watch it again. At least that was the way I interpreted it. The wiki article does mention the Cold War.

That one should be mandatory viewing for everyone.

Some of my favourites off the top of my head are Blade Runner, The Big Lebowski, and Dr. Strangelove

I was trying to think of "crimson tide " for my first list . Love the lipinzonner ? stallion exchange near the end . I remember fantastic planet , surreal but it's one of those that stays with you long after it's over. Young frankenstein / top shelf , I'm ashamed I forgot it . Raging bull and shawshank redemption also excellent , how about "the green mile ", "outlaw josie wales" and" jeremiah johnson" , "butch cassidy and the sundance kid" and "sneakers "while we're doing robert redford, " cool hand luke" and "thunderbolt and lightfoot" should get honorable mentions. can't believe no ones mentioned "soilent green " considering the nature of this website.Perhaps not a great movie but great subject matter.

Good films, yes indeed. But don't link to IMDB. Nobody cares about that. Give us a good youtube link I think that was John Goodman's most amazing performance.

Waking Life

Very strange animation style; philosophical type movie. Lots of pseudophilosophy and lots of bullshit but overall very interesting and unique.

The Dude abides.

Johnson?

Oh...nice marmot!

Aaron's video put me in mind of Bruno Bozzetto's Allegro Non Troppo, which is sort of an adult version of Fantasia. They showed the evolution sequence which uses Bolero on this free Classical video channel a few years back, which led to a deep interest in Ravel's music for me. There's a snippet of it at YouTube but with different music. Fantastic flick, think I'll snap up a copy.

No one here into classic cinema? Any good Bogy flicks, Maltese Falcon Big Sleep African Queen you name it. Howard Hawks made a great flick called His Girl Friday, one of those mile-a-minute dialogue jobs, hilarious. He also supposedly directed the original Thing From Another World, anonymously. Great bit of SF with James Arness (Gunsmoke) as the Thing. The Devil Thumbs a Ride, Kiss Me Deadly, and D.O.A. are some excellent more obscure film noirs.

The short film 12 Monkeys was based on is a great movie: La Jetee. It's almost all still frames, there's a website with it. Fascinating flick, missed a chance to tape it off TCM this year. There's a French comedy called My New Partner that's a scream. Eating Raoul. The Quiet Earth. Bad Lieutenant. My Name is Nobody.

Cripes this subject, I could type for days and not get finished.

Whats a point having enjoyable films anyway? If I really liked the movie, I remember any frase, any shot. Its boring to watch it again.

A really good film is like a well-worn pair of cotton briefs to me , it gets more silky-smooth and easier to wear the more times you put it on . I'm working on being able to quote the terminator in it's entirety , jaws I pretty much know by heart "your going to ignore this particular problem until it swims up and bites you on the ass!" yummy , " that mr. Hooper is the U.S.S. indianapolis ", these movies are like a perfect chateaubriand , you slowly savor each and every bite and the week after you want the taste again. So what if you know how it ends , if you own a Rembrandt do you look at it only once? No , you look at it every day to hopefully detect a slight nuance of color or shading that you hadn't seen yet , or you look at it just because you enjoy looking at it , do you make love to a beautiful woman just once ? You explore each and every curve and crevice of her each time ,as if it were the first . Sure it won't match the first time , but you'll enjoy it just the same.
