Re: Can the power grid handle this heat wave ?

Postby AlCzervik » Thu 09 Aug 2007, 22:23:38

I have to say, it's coming through swimmingly. Detroit has been a hotbox for a week or two, and we're supposed to get the same for another week. I saw that the PGA Championship in Oklahoma was predicting 100+ and serious humidity for four days. I assume the rest of the country was getting a lot of what these two states got. Maybe Matt Simmons was wrong about the grid, for now.

here in Central Florida where its normally hot in the summer its actually at 95 for the forecast. Normally we might hit 90 or 92. It doesnt seem like a lot but a few degrees and alot of humidity means a heat index of around 105 which means those ACs are just a crankin!

Accelerated ageing of equipment, the damage is cumulative.

If it's not out of service, it's accumulating points towards its next breakdown.

The answer is no, it can't handle it, it's just deferred. That's OK so long as the maintenance isn't.

That's why it's prudent to get a backup power source.

Obviously global warming. But don't worry. If the temperature goes down that will also be because of global warming. /wrists

And you still got friends? You must get pretty ripe.

It'll be another 103+ record breaking degrees again here in the South. These kind of hot and humid temperatures are fatal to the very young and elderly. Imagine the death toll down here without AC.

Power suppliers here said that three days ago they set a record for demand and yesterday that record was broken. I wonder how many other records were broken

I am going to guy a generator very soon. Things are getting a little too crazy out there for me. We lost power here last year a few times due to severe storms ( global warming / global climate change is real ). Home depot has 5,000 watt generators for about 500.00 I think. That should do for what I need. Now I just need to know how to store about four- 5gal gas cans. Don't want to blow my friggen house up.

I find the simplest way to stay cool when you have to power is to get your clothes wet. Hang around in wet clothes, and you'll be fine.

That can be risky. Unless heat is an immediate danger, letting a load of water cling to your torso like that can end with you coughing your lungs out.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('zensui', 'W')hat about a wet towel here and there, like in the face?

Yeah, that's fine. Splashing water on your face works great, lots of heat lost through there.

Apparently this is the fourth straight day of record-setting electricity demand here in Atlanta - everyone cranked the AC at once and blew up a bunch of transformers. Personally I don't see what the big deal is.. I haven't used the AC once this year and my house stays between 80-85 degrees which is definitely tolerable for me. I just wear loose clothing and have ice water handy at all times. No prob.

It's the very young and elderly that have a ruff time regulating their body temperatures that suffer.

Here a small and cheap trick if you don't have (or don'T want to use) a AC unit : Cooling by evaporation..

Get a small spraying bottle with water and a fan, spray yourself with water and hang around the fan..

It's quite effective ! I'm using this trick right now while sitting in front of my computer and i's currently 29C (84F) over here (quebec province) ..

Try it,you could be surprised how effective it is..in fact,if you're doing it too much, you might start quivering pretty fast really if you're spraying around your neck :)..
