I expect more to come where the news about PO becomes more widespread, after all this is number one site when you google with "peakoil" word and 4th with "peak oil"


probably after all the PO related stuff happening people start to wake up, Bush with his addiction, iraq war - a lot (if not the most) believe it was the oil, price at the pump, hydrengne car (scam), ethanol all over the news (another scam) etc... with news like that all over the place no wonder some people end up on this site

To resolve the dillema I purchased a copy of "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak" by Kenneth Deffeyes. I look forward to reading the book when it arrives.

To be serious; I have been aware of PO for a couple or three years now, and have been lurking around the net since then - learning. I actually found out about PO through a motorcycle forum, and spent that first night up really late reading everything I could find. I joined Running On Empty over at Yahoo Groups, then found my way to The Oil Drum, here, LATOC, and a few other places. Only recently did I realize that this forum existed!

About me (like you really care). I live outside of Tucson, Arizona where it is nowhere near sustainable. I have 3 kids, and my girlfriend and her daughter live with me. Needless to say, but I need to move! I have a community in the mountains picked out, but I can't sell my house till next year (divorce settlement thing). Hopefully TSHTF after I move.

I don't have a lot to offer, but will put in my $.02 on occasion - whether you want me to or not. My girl friend is PO aware, but it scares her, so she doesn't like to talk about it. Me, I NEED to talk about it, so I am here.

This is a good sized forum, so I will most likely get lost in the woodwork. None the less, glad to meet you. Now quit reading my crap and go get prepared!

I've been PO aware for over 3 years and online for almost as long.

Posts like those above seem to repeat themselves on a regular occasion with traffic rising and falling with global oil prices.

It's almost ho-hum to me at this point, though to all newbies, welcome. Dont worry, your frantic fear driven need to prepare will be overwhelmed (in most cases) by the even greater reality that there is not a whole lot you can do (unless your independently wealthy) aside from making mostly minor changes to make your life more liveable during minor periods of hardships.

Me? I've reduced my family's exposure to high energy costs by situating myself in a small town where both my wife and I can get by with a minimal amount of driving in jobs that are recession-resistant. Will a gas price spike, economic recession or moderate level crisis going to affect me? Not as bad as it could have where I used to live. Will we be insulated in a total civilization collapse? Nope. We're still fucked.

Baha - I was just reading up un solar cookers yesterday. I don't think I can help you though, you probably have done more homework than I. My GF's daughter and I did do an experiment recently, by cooking an egg in a cast iron skillet. The egg wouldn't cook until I put one mirror out to double the sun light. The egg did cook, but it took a while. I imagine 4 mirrors would have done the trick. Send me a lasagna.

Well PJ, I know what your saying, but I never left the scene when oil prices dropped. I, like you, don't expect to prevent every possible situation, but to mitigate the possible outcomes. In a year and a half, me and mine should be moderately sustainable, with almost no need for fossil energy save electricity. All of that and still living the American dream - so to speak.

Then a few days ago Petraeus (sp?) said the US would be 15 years in Iraq and then I knew Peak Oil is here and now.

So it appears that most new viewers come here by searching for news about peak oil, as master_rb said, and not by refferal from some other web site. Interesting, PO is really a grass roots concept for most.
