$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tyler_JC', 'W')ell, I consider that to be a high enough number to warrent caution.
Also, that number is an average, it could be much higher or lower depending on the individual. I'd hate to be the 1 in 2000 who didn't think it was worth worrying about and ends up sick.
The point is, that your actual risk per go is not 1:2000, if you are heterosexual living in the US.
Lets assume, that you would have occassional sex with a prostitute in Las Vegas and lets assume, that 10% of them are HIV positive (Me think, it is less than 10% in fact).
Under that scenario you have 1:20 000 chance per go assuming no condom use.
I really dont see it worth bothering about this kind of risks, as my risk of death or awful disability is comparable, when I drive my car to a nearby town.
On the other hand sex with a prostitute in Congo Republic, where 70% of those are HIV positive gives you about 1:3000 per go assuming unprotected sex.
If you live in Congo and you are dedicated prostitute customer, it would be wise to use condoms, but if you are a tourist there or do it very rarely - what the point to bother?
Now finally, when you are after some girls, but those are not necesserely prostitutes and you are chasing them it in the US or in Europe, where HIV prevalence is low (lets assume 1%, but it is much lower in fact), then your risk per go is 1:200 000.
It is complete absurdity to bother about risks in that range as large number of everyday activities are giving you far higher risks of death or serious disease.
So, as long as heterosexual contacts are considered, safe sex is just condom manufactures and safety Nazis propaganda.
You should only be concerned about AIDS if you are gay, prostitute "flooded" with customers, iv drug addict or member of other risk group.
Otherwise - no point to bother. AIDS is just a problem of risk groups and of small number of unlucky souls who are often in contact with risk group members.
