kochvenik - understood. congrats on the new addition.
it depends on what tack you want to take. if you are thinking of instrumental knowledge for survival and saving lives, by all means, medical science especially midwifing.
on the other hand, i'm more worried about the way-of-being-in-the-world that got us into this mess to begin with. my own personal unprovable belief is that spiritual practice is the only way to evolve psychologically, developmentally past a certain point. ultimately all processes that yield personal growth are fundamentally spiritual in nature, because that's one way i define spirituality - personal substance, essence, whatever. from that arise all intellectual, creative achievements (including medical theory from any culture) as well as all expressions of power, desire, and love. such as, OH, governing bodies of nation-states.
of course, i did include holistic medicine and dentistry, so i'm officially off the heads-up-ass list anyway

.
dentistry is another life-critical science. you know why? infections occuring in the mouth, i.e. blood poisoning from absess, decay etc., occur above the blood-brain barrier and therefore can be conveyed directly to the brain. dental prevention and care saves lots of lives that would be lost to more ordinary causes. so you gonna grab one item on the way out of the house? forget i said toilet paper - it really should be your toothbrush!
