$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jpfrazer', 'b')ut more like - what's good about civilization or society? I don't want to make any suggestions. Perhaps it should be framed as 'If yoyu were Noah what would you put in the ark?' What lessons should we not forget if all the libraries are used as fuel?

Probably a copy of the CRC handbook of Chemistry and Physics...books on mathematics....a good set of global maps...

Well, shit, it looks like most of you can do without a pair of sturdy footwear, water proof material, a steel weapon, and a nice, large, tough backpack. If you go to a military surplus or outdoor website/store, I think you'll have a hard time finding stuff that shouldn't be saved.

I'd also like to see a lot of rope. Knowing how time consuming it is to make rope, I can always appreciate going to a store and exchanging nylon rope for a piece of paper.

I'd prefer to have literature about medical procedures and edible plant identification. If you want to have historical data about industrial civilzation, that's great; but I do think you can heavily reduce the details and simply say that we extracted the hard-to-find resources, and applied those resources so we can have a wide variety of things that are shiny and make a beeping noise.

i had this idea once.

get ahold of one of those cd presses because they make the data part of the cd's out of metal and not dye like the burnable cd's. put all the information i think is worth saving to as many cd's as it takes while also making a extra copy of these which resuts in 2 sets.

along with these sets i would put togeather a low power computer with as few moving parts as i can each of the two will have two cd-rom readers(one main and one backup with drawings showing how to replace it.) as well as drawings on how to set up the computer.

a set of writen instrutions on how to set up the computer in the 3 most used languages today considering any new ones would be most likely based on these.

these will be placed in two sepreate completely sealed containers(one cd-rom set, 1 computer and backup cd-reader, one set of drawn instrutions on how to replace the cd-rom, one set of writen instrutions)

where to put these containers i have not decided.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('kochevnik', 'I')f I remember rightly, before the modern age of medicine, 40 percent of women died as a direct or indirect result of childbirth.

Well..sorta depends on how you define the age of modern medicine. In the 1840's the maternal mortality in Vienna was about 15-20%. A young doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis figured out that this was because the doctors were disceting cadavers in the anatomy lab and then rushing over to deliver babies without washing their hands. Semmelweis demanded that the doctors at his hospital start scrubbing their hands with a solution of chlorinated lime. The death rate promptly dropted below 2%. Semmelweis was fired for stating that doctors might be causing infections, and he died in an insane assylum in 1886. It was the 1880's before most doctors and hospitals started accepting his conclusions and washing their hands. So called scientific or modern medicine came into being and banished all other medical disciplines between 1850 and 1900 in the US and somewhat earlier in Europe.

So.....I'm not sure if it's fair to assume that those levels of mortality would exist if doctors weren't delivering babies with cadaver goo on their hands. Maternal mortality rates among indigenous people in latin and south america are currently well below 1%. That's still much higher than the current American figure of 12 per 100,000, but all in all, it's probably not so bad.

My brothers and sisters ie. the youth. Also the dog. Even if I tried to save my parents they'd tell me to screw off.

All the episodes of Star Trek TNG

Oh what might have been.

Also a couple of bottles of Glenfiddich and Jameson 12 year old (for medecinal purposes).

My copy of "Blame it on Ginger" an all time porn classic. Some Habana cigars, a jar of vaseline, heavy duty rubber condoms, some small gerbils and a goat.

Oh dear I seem to be losing it again. Where are my tablets.

No but seriously. Books. If future generations are going to survive then passing on knowledge to them will be the most important thing. :-D

kochvenik - understood. congrats on the new addition.

it depends on what tack you want to take. if you are thinking of instrumental knowledge for survival and saving lives, by all means, medical science especially midwifing.

on the other hand, i'm more worried about the way-of-being-in-the-world that got us into this mess to begin with. my own personal unprovable belief is that spiritual practice is the only way to evolve psychologically, developmentally past a certain point. ultimately all processes that yield personal growth are fundamentally spiritual in nature, because that's one way i define spirituality - personal substance, essence, whatever. from that arise all intellectual, creative achievements (including medical theory from any culture) as well as all expressions of power, desire, and love. such as, OH, governing bodies of nation-states.

of course, i did include holistic medicine and dentistry, so i'm officially off the heads-up-ass list anyway :P.

dentistry is another life-critical science. you know why? infections occuring in the mouth, i.e. blood poisoning from absess, decay etc., occur above the blood-brain barrier and therefore can be conveyed directly to the brain. dental prevention and care saves lots of lives that would be lost to more ordinary causes. so you gonna grab one item on the way out of the house? forget i said toilet paper - it really should be your toothbrush!

Books

Unread postby spiritoflennon » Mon 10 Jan 2005, 09:44:57

Books are obviously one of the major things to save, unfortunately unless they use acid free paper then you may as well use them for wiping your arse for the good they will do humanity.
Whoops did we screw up with something else? Did we always assume that we could print more books and so use cheap paper thay only lasts a few decades. Oh tell me it isn't so!!!

Of course if you want something else to wipe your arse on centuries from now you can use Federal records, books, and publications of enduring value from the US government.

Headstrong

To your common sense firm arguments
I won't listen to your voice of reason trying to change my mind.
I mind my feelings and not your words.
Didn't you notice I'm so headstrong even when I know I'm wrong?
Take this to your heart and into your head now:
before you waste your time, call a truce and call a draw.

What's the use in mapping your views out in orderly form
when it does nothing but confuse and anger me more?
I mind my feelings and not your words.
Didn't you notice I'm so headstrong.
You're talking to a deaf stone wall.
Take this to your heart and into your head now:
the old wives' tale is true, I'll repeat it.
All is fair in love and war, that's how the famous saying goes.

Open up your eyes, see me for what I am:
cast in iron, I won't break and I won't bend.
Take this to your heart and into your head now:
the old wives' tale is true, I'll repeat it.
All is fair in love and war, that's how the famous saying goes.

If I told you we were out to sea in a bottomless boat,
you'd try anything to save us, you'd try anything to keep us afloat.
And if we were living in a house afire,
I don't believe that you could rush out and escape it and not rescue me.

Take this to your heart and into your head now:
the old wives' tale is true, I'll repeat it.
All is fair in love and war, that's how the famous saying goes.
Listen, I think they were talking to you.

I love it when people quote apt lyrics. And spirit of lennon, bless you and bless the memory of John Lennon. All of my kids love the music of the Beatles. They share my enthusiasms and I love them so much.
