The Da Vinci Code Was Wrong

Postby PenultimateManStanding » Sun 17 Jun 2007, 23:39:43

The premise that the Catholic Church oppressed women is absurd. Pagan girls were married at 11 years old. Usually to old guys in thier thirties. Christian girls were usually married at 18. There's a lot more to this if you look into it. There are ancient sewers with many old dead remains of infant girls. Much like what is happening in China.

Lol, it all depends on WHEN you are talking about, the Catholic Church has been here for 1600 years, surely you do not asusme that the culture remained static for all that time? It was only in the 1500's that marriage ages started increasing, in the 700-1200 era many arranged marriages were between 12-14 year old couples. As soon as puberty hit they were married off. Once the population recovered from the Black Death in the 1400's a demographic shift took place and marriage ages started to climb.

I based my remarks on an article I read after watching the movie. Dan Brown is a graceless writer and I never finished reading his famous novel. The movie was fun to watch, but the sociological impact is interesting to ponder. Why were so many millions of readers so hooked by this message? You can check for yourself that it was complete bullshit. The 'Priory of Sion' was formed in France in 1956, look it up.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', '.')..it was complete bullshit...

When I read early on that virtually everything in the fictional book was, in fact, fiction, I lost all interest in it. Never read it, never saw the flick.

I agree that it's hard to understand what all the fuss was about when it was public knowledge from the get-go that it had nothing to do with historical fact.

I enjoyed his books, I like how he mixes fact, religious conspiracy theory, fiction and action; very enjoyable IMHO.

... If you tell a a lie fantastic enough...

BTW, I knew from the start that it was a load of bollocks. Decent read, though.

Pen you really need to read "The Secret", I think you are attracting a lot of negative energy in the universe.

I read the first twenty or so pages, it is only like 100, that is all it took to realize that the book was complete horse shit.

It doesn’t really matter if he is ‘wrong’. It’s only fiction, in which case, rightness or wrongness is irrelevant. However, it does purport to represent history, starting with an intriguingly plausible and improvable concept (pun). Therein lies the trap, since Brown bends history to his own purpose thereafter.

I bought the book on the recommendation of a friend, because of the ‘buzz’ at the time and because I needed a book to travel with. I struggled to finish reading it and now can’t remember if I really did. I learned several things from this. 1) don’t buy a book on the recommendation of a friend 2) don’t buy a book which is hyped 3) go to the library instead of the bookstore.

I found Dan Brown to be an indifferent writer and in this case grappling with a seriously interesting premise to which he was ultimately unable to do justice. His other books have the same problem – a good plot eventually wasted.

Why this book was the source of so much controversy is beyond me, unless it was deliberately orchestrated as gratuitous sales advertising.
