$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Laurasia', 'A')ccording to Wikipedia, production of 25 ruble notes stopped in 1991. So my answer is that if this was a post-fall-of-the-Soviet Union question, then it IS a trick question. If it was a Soviet-era question then it is okay, and I am not smart enough to come up with the answer.

Regards,

L.
No, I don't think it was a trick question. And we all know how unreliable wiki is. Besides, this was a 19th century conundrum. Certainly it has no bearing on our current situation. Mutual regards.

No he lost 15 roubles in money and 10 roubles worth of hat.

look, forget about changing the money with the shopowner next door. It is a red herring and the transactions cancel each other out.

Mr Fakey Wakey gives the hat seller 25 fake roubles. For that he gets a hat and 15 real roubles in change.

Therefore the hat owner is short his 15 real roubles and a hat which cost him whatever.

the answer is 25 and the guy is dead since 1910. By the way one of his stories is probably a must read for any peakoiler ( no worries, its short)
off to look for a story

its very simple and was explained by posters above;
the changer doesnt gain or loose anything;
buyer walks away with a hat and 15 roubles;
therefore seller looses a hat and 15 roubles

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('purcatty', '
')simple.
really? Let's look at this again, purcatty. What did the tenderer of the fake 25 ruble note get? A hat and 15 real rubles. What did the next-door businessman get? Nothing, he gave 25 rubles and got them back. Where does that leave the hat seller?

Yep, 15 rubles. Pretorian got his own riddle wrong.

And he can't spell "lose."
