Go Back in Time: What would you have done?

Hi ppl (Bear with me, this premise is far fetched at best)

If you could go back to some arbitrary time in the past, and somehow get a lot of influence or control, what would you change so that we could avoid the heavy handed outcome of peak oil.

I just have one request: dont talk about what shouldn't have been done. Just talk about what you would have done. That way the conversation is more on topic and positive. :-D

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

1789 put it in the constitution that it is a federal offense to export raw materials.

I would give Carter dictatorial powers to enact true conservation plans. And a pair of balls.

Well, considering that in 1789, the overwhelming majority of our exports were raw materials...you'd be permanently bankrupting the country.

I would go back to 1914 and tell the British to stay out of WW1.

A permanently agrarian USA wouldn't have gotten into this mess ;)

As for your plan, lest we forget you would have to have them repudiate the treaty with Belgium before the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

I'ld go back to East Coast United States in about 1680 and give the Indians a few history books about their fate and then I'ld give them machine guns and rpgs.

Ah yes, because a Spanish Empire covering all of North, Central, and South America would have been a much better situation for the Indians.

Well they could us the machine guns against the Spanish too.

However, on second thoughts I would go back to Ireland in 1169AD to Bannow Strand in Wexford, the site of the first Norman Landings and take out their fleet with Sunburn missiles.

#1. A permanently broke USA would have been eaten alive by creditors. We would be run by some banker's nephew from Holland by about 1800.

#2. Who cares about Belgium? The British Empire covered 30% of the world's land and 1/4 of its people in 1914. They could deal with losing the support of Belgium. And every single place that the British colonized were better off as a result (at least in aggregate, the locals suffered horribly in some places for a while)

I just don't believe anything could have been done. Other than committing some sort of genocide to cut the population which just would have put off the problems for a longer period of time.

The only way would have been to convince enough people of changing their life objectives and ensure that the limited children they had would carry on in that way.

Most people go through life blind to any problems looking for more and more to consume. The few percent that do not are seen as whackos.

Well, under British rule, Ireland became modernized/industrialized.

In fact, the British did such a great job of modernizing Ireland that Ireland is now a far superior place to live.

International Rankings of Ireland

#4 in GDP per person
#1 in Freedom of the Press
#2 Beer consumption per person
Essentially 100% Literacy
Very low AIDS/HIV rate

The UK is a mere #6 in beer consumption.

Excuse me? Ireland was a nation of farmers well into the 20th century. They went through the "troubles" and began to really thrive with increased tourist interest and a developing technology industry.

Ireland was a center of culture and learning before the Norman conquest. Then England came and came within a hairs' breadth of destroying Irish culture.

Ireland did not ever need England. In fact, no white european people has ever needed to be conquered for cultural transmission because they are so damn close together.

Africa is another story....they'd still be running around in grass skirts if Europeans didn't come. Europeans kept the peace....then Africans felt they could govern themselves. Gee...what a success story.

I actually set up that entire thing about Ireland in order to make a reference to per capita beer consumption.

I take it back, the Brits buggered Ireland and they should have left the Irish alone.

I think I would have stopped Lincoln from getting assassinated.

Or preferably, stopped the entire civil war from happening.
