Career of the Future: Local Water Baron

Unread postby MattSavinar » Wed 02 Jun 2004, 03:09:18

This is a topic I'm going to begin covering on my site in more depth, but something I've been telling people is:

"If you've got $25,000 to spend, forget solar panels. Invest in securing yourself a fresh water supply. Without fossil-fuels, our ability to deliver fresh water shuts down. You can live without electricity, you can't live without water."

Here are a couple of interesting devices/companies that I'm in the process of investigating:

Watercone.de
Airwatercorp.com

If you were to invest in these (particularly one of the larger airwatercorp machines) and fresh water in your area got scarce, you might be able to eek out a living as a water vendor.

Note: as far as the two companies are concerned, when I have more pertinent information, I will be posting it on my site or in my newsletter.

Interesting concept.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days

My guess is that if people knew I was the only guy in the area with fresh water and they were desperate for it I might be on the business end of a lynch mob. But the advice is good. Where some see the possibility for entrepreneurship I see societal collapse and the wasteland. We can still agree to disagree and be amicable gents, though.

Timely advice, rainwater collection and re-fitting my well water pump so that I can use it when there is no power are top of my list right now.

I can't seem to get the second link to work, even though I googled it - is their site down or is it just me?

This is also something I have been putting off and off doing.

Anybody got any products to recommend for this.

BTW, Ebyss, the 6 weeks of no rain is making me worried about my well already. I'm in Cork.

This is a big concern of mine as well and I am looking at all options.

Check this out it says 350 feet capacity which is exactly where my well hit water and the driller went another 60 feet. May not be a viable option for me, it may work for you though.

Hand Pump or Solar Powered 12v Motor Driven Water Pump

Within the last two years I have installed metal roofing on the house and all outbuildings. Currently I've got over 3000 sqft of rain water catchments surface area. Cisterns and gutters will be installed before the end of the summer.

these are pretty cool but I imagine you would need to treat the water.

In a post-oil world, to be the Baron of any scarce resource in high demand, you must have the cooperation of a local militia. People will attempt to take it by force, hence the need for organized defense.

There must be the combination of the militancy of Montana survivalists and the getting along togetherness of the friendly ecovillages. Otherwise you are just a sitting duck.

Yup :( I have 6 horses to water too :/

6 weeks without rain in Ireland is pratically unheard of. 6 weeks without rain in April? I never thought I'd see the day. I'm in Wicklow, pretty high up, just on the east side of the Wicklow Mountains - whenever there's rain we get it first and heaviest. Haven't had a drop for weeks. I am very worried about it to be honest. The kicker is that we had practically 4 months of uninterrupted rain during the winter - we were flooded. Plan now is to catch all that rain for dry spells like this. If this lasts all summer, we're screwed.

UncoveringTruths, thank you for the link. A hand pump is something I've been wondering about, and a solar powered pump would be fantastic. I'll look into this further.

Ireland not raining? That is unheard of. If the sod of Ireland dries out...then you're not the Emerald Isle...

Remember though, there is NO SUCH THING as global warming/climate change.

P.S. So The wicklow mountains are in Cork? I always wondered where tommy Byrne (wolfe tones) was singing of.

Definitely going to look into that deep well hand pump. I wonder if it could be adapted to a more efficient foot pump (for girls).

The Pump is adaptable with a small motor that will hook up to existing electricity and you can get the solar option as well. Very versatile! I imagine a resourceful person could figure out how to connect it to a bike.

The Wicklow mountains are in Wicklow, directly south of Dublin, on the east coast. That's where I'm from. MadPaddy is from Cork, in the southern part of Ireland, which is typically warmer than Wicklow. The fact that neither of us is having rain is very worrying. Cork should be wet alright, but afaik, not as wet as Wicklow.

And you're right - it ain't looking particularly emerald at the moment - one of my fields is distinctly dry and brown. That said, it's doing wonders for my horses feet. The farmers around are a bit unsettled, but most of them rested their grazing over the wet winter, so they do have grass - but there just isn't enough growth at the moment.

The solar pump and hand pump look very good - thanks again for the link UT.
