When/If the crash happens, what will you miss?

Unread postby underdressed » Sat 14 Apr 2007, 01:56:17

I'm sitting here doing some pretty good damage to a bottle of Bushmill's and I'm thinking about how much I'll miss whiskey. I can distill my own, but it won't be like this. Other things on my list:

1. Dr. Pepper -- What the hell is it? It tastes good, but what is it?
2. The internet
3. photographs -- not too difficult, but I never learned those skills.
4. Guinness extra stout -- see comments about Bushmill's

I'm a doomer, so I know my list of what won't be available will be different than others. The question pertains to what you would miss if your vision of crash/power down/slow bleed happens.

Gimme a break, no matter how bad the crash will be, sea transport will still be cheap. Maybe it won't be as fast as now, but wine doesn't go bad if it spend a few weeks or months on the ship. It will only affect the foods that start rotting fast. Besides, there's plenty of good european wines to choose from. :-D

I think Internet will still be alive and well but just that the number of people online might diminish to a trickle...maybe just peak oiler with enough solar panels.

I heard internet is nuclear explosion proof...i think.

I will miss

1. Cheap Stuff from China
2. Cheap transportation
3. Cheap food
4. Mega Shops
5. Safe streets.

Okay, so, seeing the joy on a childs face as they visit Mickey's house is a more abohorent display of excess than sitting in front of a computer swilling Bushmills and Guiness or Flying around in a cessna jet just for fun. Why is this any different from on-demand hot water? All are luxuries, are they not? Obviously, the point of the original posters question. So, flame elsewhere Gideon! Futhermore, foriegn tourists make special pilgrimages to California and Florida USA specifically to visit the socalled shithole of fat American excess.

My job.
There’s a strange irony related to this subject [oil and gas extraction] that the better you do the job at exploiting this oil and gas, the sooner it is gone.

Speculating about what life will be like after the crash. 8)

I'd miss my extreme abundance of free time.

I'd also miss cheap restaurant food.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Gideon', 'O')n demand hot water.

Me, too. You really can have no idea of what a gift that is until you don't have it for an extended period of time.

Being able to fly half way round the world to visit my parents. Hopefully the phone system will still be with us even if 747s aren't.

We've already cut just about everything most people think of as normal back or completely away from our lives, so already things like hot water on demand or the ability to travel are incredibly appreciated.

While we have a reasonable amount of food insecurity right now, we still have plenty to eat. In a crash, this really concerns me. We just lost a lot of our garden to a freak cold snap, and were that all we had, it would have been devastating.

More than anything, I'll miss the "buffer" that we have in almost all regards... from illness, from starvation, from weather, from cold/hot, from parasites/insects, from other humans, from the government, from economic despair...

If you'll bend your backs, I will help you re-engineer running water and the caldarium (hot water on demand).

I will miss Coca-Cola, Chinese food (this will be painful), and Pineapple.

I will miss computers. Probably CDs as well. And the internet (being able to have contact with folks you've not seen in some time is going to become much, much harder).

I will NOT miss most of what parades these days as "music", though.
