I'm sure most don't want to admit to all the neat stuff they are paying for.

I hardley ever see kids driving around ol beaters these days (either it's a newer sports car or that full size 4X4 truck). Everyone HAS to have a cell phone (use while driving is the coolest). Of course it's the same thing in the coffee shops, got to have that lap top running into the high speed wireless while drinking that $4 a cup special coffee drink. Regular TV, not a fricken chance, it's so crappy, why even own a set unless you got cable. Then again with these cool DVD's these days, it's a MUST to have a BIG screen with surround sound (42" screen or larger). Stereo is totally unexceptable. Furthermore, if you ain't a member of that local yuppie GYM, you ain't Jack! The list goes on & on. Just put it on your card - you can have anything you want! Trust me.

second hand car which I got for free
two cell phones :lol: yes I know
regular tv
cable internet, which is equivalent to dsl
yes cable tv

no debt though
and my savings are going up
unfortunaly I tend to go out a bit too often
should try to cut back on that

What? After 30 you can get these things? How about financial questions for everyone.

Up until 6 months ago I had

no big TV, no cable and no cell phone.

Now- I bought a 27" TV off of Craig's List for 200 $ when my old TV crapped out, and got hooked into a deal for a bundled service that included cell phone, land line, DSL and cable. They said it would be 120 $ a month- its more like 140$. That's still too expensive in my book and I'm going to ditch cable TV pretty soon. (I love watching the Daily Show and the Colbert Report though.)

I feel like I have to have a cell phone because my wife has a kid on the way and I want her to be able to reach me at any time if she goes into labor. Agh- its probably just rationaliazation though-

the girl and i are 26 this year.

#1. no cars; three bikes, trailers, packs, tools, home bike repair ect
#2. no privacy? then no fucking money for cell fone providers. vonage (im watching their privacy policies closely......i could just set up a voip pbx with wireless and use payfones)
#3. wee have a small tv. its only used for dvds and as a video out for our linux box
#4-5. and by marduk we have a cable internet connection. not cable tv though. i called to get it turned on and had to talk to a supervisor just to get internet without tv bundled in. im very persistent and it came down to telling the guy i dont want any of their mind numbing programming (two levels on that word) in my household. we do everything online and purchase all of the durable goods we cant find in mom and pop stores online to deprive wallmart of money. we also have cheap fone service through our broadband.

we make minimum wage and make most of our health/medicine / cosmetic needs house cleaning products ourselves. we cook almost all of our food from scratch. we can techniquly save half of our income every month if we want. buying survival stuff, getting new income saving projects online and buying metels and tools and stuff takes away from the saving half every month.

yeah not everyone in my peer group is your average broke financially irresponsible credit card junkie, and some of us do alright despite poverty.

What frivilous things for a person who would be hanging out here! I may have a newer car but it is fully paid. Never had a cell phone or big screen TV. Never had DSL or cable TV unless it was included with the rent. BTW I am 37 now and I am hardly broke. I wonder why!

Well, the annual TV licence payment is rather expensive here, and it just keeps on rising. Besides, television doesn't offer that much interesting or needful information that I couldn't get elsewhere. As for recreation and relaxation, I prefer reading or internet.

I just turned 29 and I am single. Here we go:

1) I have a 1992 Peugeot 106 XN (bought in 2001 with cash). It is the crappiest car in my company's parking (I work in Switzerland for a software editor) but it works and doesn't cost too much in gas, insurance or parts.

2) Yes (it costs me 12.50 € per month, as I don't call much, I prefer emails or instant messaging).

3) No. To watch videos, I use my computer and one of my 17" LCDs. Besides, the annual TV licence payment is very expensive in Switzerland. I don't have a radio either, to avoid paying the radio licence payment (I'm not kidding).

4) Yes (the cheapest one: it costs me 70 CHF per month though, including 25 CHF per month for the land line)

5) No.

I have no debt and quite a lot of savings (i.e. I could afford not getting any income during several years), because I stayed with my parents for a while after getting my job. Now I rent a spartiat 1-bedroom flat 1 km away from work, since buying is too expensive in Switzerland IMHO. I don't save that much these days though, since I spend quite a lot on my hobbies (chess tournaments, social dancing, piano/keyboard learning) and I often eat out with coworkers. I only have one life after all...

I'm not broke. I'm living quite comfortably while I still can, fully realizing that soon enough I'll be scavanging dumpsters for food.

Car: 2003 Subaru WRX. Nearly paid off (hopefully this summer). Wife's 2005 Civic will take a year longer. Nowadays I only drive about 60 miles a week.

Cell phone: Yes, but I use it approx. 5 mins a week. I hate all phones, especially when people call me, so I leave it off.

Big screen TV: I don't watch TV. I watch movies on the 27" Panasonic I bought in '96 (or my computer monitor).

Internet: Cable connection. Much more reliable than the local DSL. And well worth the $40/month. That will be the last non-utility service I drop... access to information means a lot to me.

Cable: I hate TV, but my wife watches it. I scored a minor victory in convincing her to stick with true basic cable.

My big wasteful indulgence is guitar and recording gear. I plan to enjoy the sound of a good tube amp for as long as I can. More importantly for my mental health, it's a good creative outlet.

When TSHTF, I fully expect to lose everytihng: house, cars, gear, everything. So be it. I'll adapt, hopefully less painfully than those who aren't mentally prepared for it. In the meantime I'll savor what luxuries I have.

EDIT: Why is this in the Psych forum?

EDIT AGAIN: Whoops, I completely missed the restriction in the subject (<30). Oh well, my two cents anyway, if the opnion of an old fart of 35 counts for anything.

Cell phone won't break the bank either. Although now I truly understand why there are a lot of 'doomers' on this site. You aren't the average American by a lot! Seems like lots of people here with no TVs and cars can sit back and laugh at the average American when the time comes. Hence, a wish and a hope for total collapse. Just an observation.


Uninspired123, you miss the point. It’s not a question of affording most of these items, it’s why do you need them?

I personally have a cell phone (get a discount, I work for AT&T), it’s convenient and I can turn it off when I don’t want to receive calls (probably the main reason I have one).

I could easily afford any wide screen plasma unit I’ve seen advertised. but why would I have want one? or any TV receiver for that that matter? I don’t have enough time to read important stuff I want to in the leisure time I have. The question I have to ask you is why you want to waste significant portions of your life on trash? 46 years later, I still have to agree with FCC commissioner Newton Minow, TV is a still a “vast waste land”.

I wish I could totally cut myself off from a perceived need for an automobile, but I’m weaning myself now. Have a truck I bought new that will turn 20 this year. With my income and credit I could go to any Mercedes or BMW dealership and qualify to purchase a brand new vehicle, many of my co-workers do. But why do I need one? My truck still runs good and gets me from point A to Z when I need it. If the reports we are reading right now about Saudi Arabia peaking last year are valid, it will be the final vehicle I own.
(Am looking for a third bicycle to buy because I use them more than my truck).

Uninspired123 what you need to wake up to is not what you want, but what you need.

P.S. If you've never read "Walden" by Henry Thoreau, do it now. If you HAD to read it in college for a report, read it again slowly so you understand him, and maybe some of the people here.

Car: yes, old beaters, no payments
Cell: yes, cheapest plan, barely use it. It's saved my hide in emergencies.
TV: no, have 15"TV with built-in VCR, received as gift, wife uses it for yoga videos
DSL: yes, hell yes.
Cable: no, hell no.

I'm not broke, my wife and I both have jobs. Our major expenses are supporting younger siblings, and mortgage payments.

I watch for free, direct from the Comedy Central website. The shows are divided into several-minute long clips, made available a day or two after the original airing.
