Financial question for those <30?

Unread postby vision-master » Fri 09 Mar 2007, 13:31:39

Do you:

Drive a newer car/ payments?
Have a cell phone?
Have big screen TV?
Have a DSL internet connection at home?
Have cable TV?

No wonder why you're broke!

Drive a newer car/ payments? 183k miles, no payments

Have a cell phone? Yes, waiting for contract to run out.

Have big screen TV? Hell no, last one was given to me. I will shoot it someday soon.

Have a DSL internet connection at home? Yes for business purposes.

Have cable TV? Yes but only because it's cheaper that way (damn cable company!)

I recently found out that everything I own fits into 4 large(ish) boxes, a duffel, suitcase (rolling one) and a backpack.

I have savings (not like inflation is going to leave me with much....but its there)

I have a old beater, and its not like I really care about driving it either.

No cell phone, I do use calling cards from time to time...

yeah...I am un-american and I am proud of that.

I could buy a big screen later today if I wanted...and I have the sense not to.

Are you under 30 Savinar, I'd never guessed. :)

Onto the list:
1. No car
2. I have a cell phone (old)
3. No big screen TV.
4. DSL, no. I have a much better connection than that (cheap though)
5. Cable tv, yes (free)

The reason why I am broke is not because of any of these things, but because I live on a small student loan.

1) Yes, a 2004 that I only have 15,000 miles on. Should last for a long, long time.
2) Cell phones are free. The service is $40/month, which is not much more than a land line
3) Not even close
4) Cable.
5) Getting extended basic while paying only for the local channels. I'm not telling Comcast.

Having things doesn't make you broke. Having kids makes you broke! I had most of those things before I had kids, and I had money, too.
For what child care costs, I could buy a brand new Toyota Prius every 30,000 miles.
The reason most people are broke is because they finance all the big purchases after they failed to save a dime for that thing that they really really really wanted. Just like the ARM drove up real estate prices with their ridiculously low initial rates, creative financing for other large purchases has the same result...pricey cars, tv's, furniture, whatever, because you get it all for 0% interest for the first year or whatever. dumbasses line up for these deals every day. it's consumers fucking themselves and each other by unwittingly driving up the price when they buy something they can't really afford yet.
we need a 'just say no' program for dumbass consumers.

No car. No Kids. High rent. Eat out regularly. Nice cell. 45" plasma Hdtv with 40 movie channels, 8 mb/sec internet connection, ipod, gym membership, one of those space foam beds and I wear an imitation rolex! 8)

No debt though, thank god.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cobra_Strike', 'I') recently found out that everything I own fits into 4 large(ish) boxes, a duffel, suitcase (rolling one) and a backpack.

It’s been over 22 years since I was under 30, but I can say when I was 18, and into most of 19, everything I owned could fit into a military duffel bag. I joined the Air Force the summer of 1973, immediately before the original “Oil Crisis” of that October.

Had No Car- marched to class for tech school at Keesler AFB for most of a year.

Cell Phone? Heck we had to save up change for pay phones!

Big Screen TV- nope either, didn’t have time then, don’t own a TV now.

DSL or Dial Up? we forget how very recent an invention the internet and the web is. Didn’t exist except in theory in 1973.

Cable TV- like Springsteen said about an early version of it, “69 channels and nothin’s on”

I remember being quite happy at that age. I guess I didn’t know all this stuff was required.

Drive a newer car/ payments? Nope, never have, never will. Does the term "resident gunzel" explain to you my preferred mode of travel?
Have a cell phone? Yes. Though I'm a responsible user. I'm on a $30 plan and I have only gone over once (and that's because my brother decided to use the thing!!! ). Going to prepaid once the contract expires next month.
Have big screen TV? No. Fairly large (22" Widescreen) monitor, though. I have a TV, but it's a recent hand-me-down. What , I'm not going to complain if my aunt is going to chuck out a 1.5 year old 51cm TV and offers it to me. She upgraded to a big one.

TV is currently in my brother's room. I have a TV tuner in my computer, though courtesy of the crappy digital reception around here, I don't use it.
Have a DSL internet connection at home? ADSL. It's cheap and flogs dialup. I use the 'net enough that it's actually cheaper than dialup for our family.
Have cable TV? Nope. If they offered a subscription with only the educational channels, though, I'd consider it.

No wonder why you're broke!
No, I'm broke because my current income is $0 a week. I have about $120 in my bank account as an emergency fund which I am NOT touching under any circumstance unless there is no other option. I never go below that amount.

I have no debt though!

1 - I have a 1964 VW Beetle, so really no car payments per se, but it is over 40 years old which means constantly feeding it new parts, etc....

2 - Yeah, but the cellphone is really only for when #1 breaks down and only cost me $12/mo with my folks' cell plan

3 - 2 30 or so inch TVs, one is watched every night by my old folks, the other, mine, is only watched a couple hours a week

4 - Cable internet (connected to 3 networked computers), don't know what I'd do without the steady flow of knowledge

5 - Of course we have cable TV how else would my parents be able to lose themselves in American Idol and other craptacular TV programming?

I also pay $45/mo for 3 PC game subscriptions ($14.95/game), and have $22k in student loan debt, which, after all is said and done and interest has been added, will cost me $36k in the end :(

I also didn't get a degree, damn

So yeah, I'm mostly broke/owned by the student loan corps for the next 15-20 years

Hooray.

Drive a newer car/ payments? No car yet (the public transport is pretty good where I live).

Have a cell phone? Sure.

Have big screen TV? No TV.

Have a DSL internet connection at home? Yes.

Have cable TV? Still no TV...

Compared to most of my generation (I was born in 1979), I live pretty modestly. But it also has to do with the fact that I've just started my career, which probably won't last very long as PO seriously sets in.

How do so many people not even have a TV here, i mean even a cheap TV won't run you more than a 100 dollars. I got my last TV for 150 bucks. Cell phone won't break the bank either. Although now I truly understand why there are a lot of 'doomers' on this site. You aren't the average American by a lot! Seems like lots of people here with no TVs and cars can sit back and laugh at the average American when the time comes. Hence, a wish and a hope for total collapse. Just an observation.
