The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('edpeak', 'K')idding aside, do you work in epidemiology? Just wondering from your name and comments.
Nope I am an MD. I'm currently doing some contract work for a clinic in Seattle, and trying to get my own clinic going in Montana.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('edpeak', 'D')o you work for the government?
Well...I spent most of the day today flailing with accounting and tax forms. I don't get paid to work for the government.

I just do the free work they require of everyone so they don't kidnap me and throw me in jail.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hen I said the govt isn't necessariliy wanting us all to know something, I'm not criticizing the employees, the scientists...those
usually are hard working very well meaning, when it comes to
safety, oversight, etc...it's that sometimes higher ups in govt
say "oops, let's not rush to scream that to the public"
I don't think it's anything nearly that planned. Pin worms are inoquous if anoying. They're easy to treat. They've been around forever. Population surveys take a lot of time and money. There probably just aren't that many researchers interested in studying it or that many people tripping over themselves to fund it. You can't know everything, so you've got to decide what to spend money and time to discover. Is it really going to change much in the way of healthcare if you found out that pinworms are more common in the southeast than in New York? Probably not.

That explains a lot. I have had debates with other doctors over medicines, and their arrogance is usually maddening. They believe that anything that hasn't gotten FDA approval and is backed by hundreds of millions of dollars of research is snake oil. They don't see that the corporations making up the health care industry are slowly choking off health choices. These corporations lobby the FDA to ban natural cures that have been cheap and effective for hundreds of years or more.
Don't believe me? Check out how much it costs, and how difficult it is to buy a bottle of vitamin c capsules in Germany. I can only hope that you can uncover the dark secrets of your profession. This website might be a good start.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Falconoffury', 'T')hat explains a lot.
Give me a freaking break! I am probably the most anti-doctor doctor that you will ever meet. I share an office with an acupuncturist (Have an appointment for him to work on me tommorrow in fact.) My uncle, who also happens to be one of my big mentors, is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (i.e. acupuncture plus traditional Chinese herbal medicine). Lots of my really good friends are herbalists.
There are lots of traditional healing disciplines that, IMHO, have every bit as much validity as allopathic medicine. Where the trouble comes is that snake oil salesmen like to try and insinuate themselves into the crack between scientific medicine and other healing disciplines. If you go to a practitioner and he prescribes acupuncture to cure excessive dampness in your liver meridian, my advise is listen to him. If you find that he is running on with a lot of scientific sounding explanations that the scientists don't seem to agree with along side a lot of alternative sounding jargon that isn't part of any other traditional healing practice, then watch out. If the punchline is "Send me lots of cash for my patented formula", then run away as fast as you can. I was watching one of these clowns the other day. Alarmingly enough the informercial was on PBS. She made a very scientific presentation - Amylase, lipase, protease, bile ducts, surface area of the small intestine. Then she wanders off into this fantasy land about transit times and excess mucus, indigestion is caused by accumulation of poop in your intestine, etc. I've seen schizophrenics that were better in touch with reality. The punch line, off course, is "Send me lots of money for my colon cleanse."
I don't support banning of colon cleanses. I also don't support banning of cocaine. That doesn't imply that either of them is going to bring you good health.

Sifting through the ashes every day

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ayame', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Falconoffury', 'I') probably won't be arguing my case any further, but I would like to hear if anyone has started a diet change or cleansing program.
Well at the beginning of this thread I went and bought some psyllium husk formula with probiotics. Back then I was having abdominal cramps almost daily and inflammation of the gut. I can tell you that it's worked wonders. No more pain etc. So I'm very happy you posted this thread because without it I doubt I wouldn't have done any research and known what I needed to get to make my gut happy again.
That's one way of dealing with the Constipation Conspiracy, that doesn't necessarily support the other side, the dark forces conspiring to give you perpetual diarhea. Good on you!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') don't think it's anything nearly that planned.
I meant in general, not for pin worms in particular. I don't
have the link now but this respected researcher
at a strong university worked with the USG on the
projec to create the new pyramid (the last pyramid
we had before moving past the pyramid) and she
said, when she started on the project, BEFORE
the research was complete or even hardly started,
she was told, whatever we find out, we can't say
"eat less meat" in the recommendations. so that
was decided ahead of time. I hope you agree
some politics enter into things, at least some of
the time, I think it's naive to think corporate
agribusiness and other profits don't enter into
it. Another time, they *reduced* the number of
cows tested for BSE right after another case
was found (many european countries test
more in a month than we do in a year, and
that's before we further cut down the number
of tests even farther. I meant things like
that. I don't mean that pinworms has
a huge conspiracy.
But what I do mean is that they are not
eager to fund things that might not make
the US look good.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')Pin worms are inoquous if anoying.
Did you read the post in this thread where it
was described as sheer horrible hellish hell? I'll
not argue with you, I'll let him? do that..but
this isn't my main point anyway..
P$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'o')pulation surveys take a lot of time and money. There probably just aren't that many researchers interested in studying it or that many people tripping over themselves to fund it.
Well there would be more intersted researchers
if there was more money...Now I realize this isn't
universally held in this country but the hundreds
of billions wasted by Bush on useless or counter-productive
and even harmful to US intersts actions, and cuts
for his wealthy contributors, tell me that there's
plenty of potential sources for funding, that aren't
used. The Democrats are not much better: the
first things that are cut by Congress when the
budget is tight, are public education, public health,
public infrastructure, "little" things like that [sarcasm]
but when the economy is good, are those
the first things they re-fund? Heck no...So I was
just saying although there are many good
things about this country (like FOIA, and
not having UK's libel laws) actually making
a priority to take care of public health
isn't one of them...sure, more clinics
is more important than another study
on pinworms, I agree, but they don't
do a good job with the former, nor other
access issues, and as for the latter,
well, they should have one more recent than 1980's
at least..Instead we spend money on super
expensive medicine while neglecting
the basics. One of the most sane things
the new congress might do, if it is doing
it at all (I don't have enough confidence in it,
but maybe just maybe) will be to actually
stop *refusing* to do what everyone does
in other areas: negotiate fair prices for prescriptions.
Of course I'm not a huge believer in prescriptions,
but that's another issue...from what you wrote,
I like a lot of what you said about your MD
background. We may not agree 100% on every
part of Chinese medicine, but your overall philosophy
I wish more MD's in this country had, we'd
have better health system...
Peace,
