Ideas by Kylon!
I've already said some things about this in my "5 ways to revitalize the United States" and now I'm going to go on, and post more ideas.
NOTE: Energy, economy, the Iraq war, and global warming were covered in that thread.
6. We focus on education of our citizens- We create a massive education program that focuses on educating citizens, but only in the areas where there are actual job demands, and where they can be employed.
Everyone would get free college up to four years, but only in certain areas.
There are a great many number of actors in the lower tiers because there are so many people who want to be actors. Obviously this wouldn't subsidized past high school.
However, for engineering, sciences, business, teaching, medicine, and industrial skilled labor jobs such as welding or electricians, there would be money to be used to subsidize education in mass for college.
This would provide businesses with a larger pool of skilled labor, in areas that could actually make the country, and the individuals money.
I would also decrease the amount of time that has to be spent on English and literature, so that more of it's technical writing and grammar in highschool.
That way instead of needing 4 English credits, you'd only need 2.5. Furthermore, I'd increase the amount of science/maths in school, so that we'de have a better education.
In order to get past alot of the "oh well that's sexist! You can't do that!", I'd simply decrease the amount of credits alotted for sports. This way the value of sports (which is dominated by males) and the value of English (which is dominated by females) would both go down, even though the amount of education in sciences/maths (dominated by males) would go up. Everything would still be "equal", even though the least intelligent students would end up getting a worse grade.

We have "values" teachers elected by parents. Instead of having teachers hired by the school directly, or hired by the super intendent and what not, we have the teacher who teaches the children of parents, elected by parents. This way teachers who teach certain politically correct teachings wouldn't be brainwashing students with their garbage and forcing it down their throat. Those teachers would be controlled by the parents, which means if you have a multiculuralist who hates Christianity, then that teacher can be fired for bashing religion because that teacher is elected.
Also, if there were enough teachers who wanted a specific type of values teacher (such as a teacher of Christian religion) then they could vote for and get a values teacher of that sort put in.

We vaccinate children against narcotics but legalize illegal drugs and pardon all people who are simply criminals by virtue of drug use- We vaccinate children against narcotics such as Heroine, but legalize the drugs.
Vaccinating children against drugs works. All it requires is conjugating a viral protein to whatever drug you want to innoculate the child against. The end result is the body's immune system recognizes the drug as a disease and creates an appropriate antibody.
By doing this, we could reduce the amount of people in prison, weaken/destroy the mob, eliminate gang many gang wars, and not ruining countless innocent people's lives.
I would also make it where drugs you need by prescription would be over the counter, so long as your 21 or older.
9.
Mercenary buildup- I would create a huge mercenary army, and then have most of our own troops only act as defense or in an administrative fashion. This way some third worlder guy who only makes 1 dollar a day, can make 50-100 dollars a day, which boost up the economy of his homeland (helping third worlders) and it reduces the cost to our military, especially in lives.
Our military would primarily act as adiminstrators to this military,
and as a defense force for our nation. We let someone else do the dirty work for one tenth the cost!
10.
Modifying the banking system- We decrease tax cuts for the wealthy, and the large corporations, while making it easier to get a loan, so long as the loan is going to be spent inside the United States, and the money is spent on some industry we need/want to grow.
If we wanted to encourage people to get into the energy industry, instead of making tax cuts which only help you if you've got large/are making large sums of money, we provide very low interest loans.
This way people borrow money, invest it in an industry you want to grow in your country, and then if they succeed they make lots of money.
This way if you developed a better form of economical solar energy or something, you could get a really large loan, and make a large sum of money off of it, rather than just being rewarded for pretending to do research for something.
You only make money off of the research if you get results.
For things that you can't make money off of concievably, you provide things like the X prize, so that people who succeed in doing this, end up getting a big reward.
You could also have second place prizes, and third place prizes.
This would help medium/small businesses become very powerful/profitable if they were innovative.
Big businesses don't like being innovative as it changes the status quo, which means losing alot of money they've already got invested in things.
