Dumbest Quotes of All

Postby PenultimateManStanding » Fri 10 Dec 2004, 01:00:23

We've had the famous quotes thread (my favorite: the zen one, "its all darkness just an inch ahead") How about a dumbest quotes thread? Presumably they would be related to peak oil but not necessarily. For instance my candidate would be, "That's one small step for man, one great leap forward for mankind." I mean, here we had the greatest engineering feat in history, landing on the Moon, and Niel Armstrong comes out with this piece of puke prose? Surely they could have come up with something more graceful than that. Anything. How about, "OK, I'm walking on the Moon now" or "It's very beautiful here, everyone" or "Looks like a lot of rocks" or "Wow, what a view!" or "This isn't cheese" or "I claim this land on the behalf of the citizens of the United States of America and all their descendants unto Posterity." Actually I had a twofer thread in mind: dumbest quotes or a better quote for Niel Armstrong.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he increase in the world's population represents our victory against death...

The standard of living has risen along with the size of the world's population since the beginning of recorded time. There is no convincing economic reason why these trends toward a better life should not continue indefinitely.

Julian Simon has plenty of horseshit retarded quotes, but these two seem to magnify just how insane he is. Of course, to be fair, he may have been on inhuman doses of some pretty powerful drugs. I'm sure there's some shit out there that'll make you victorious against death.

I'm sorry, but drugs cannot possible explain some of Simons real classics... they don't make you THAT stupid.

More from that Guardian of Rationality, Julian Simon:

"Technology exists now to produce in virtually inexhaustible quantities just about all the products made by nature - foodstuffs, oil, even pearls and diamonds . . . We have in our hands now - actually in our libraries - the technology to feed, clothe and supply energy to an ever-growing population for the next 7 billion years . . . Even if no new knowledge were ever gained . . . we would be able to go on increasing our population forever . . ."

And from Jack Kemp, who was the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Cabinet of President George Bush:

"Nonsense, people are not a drain on the resources of the planet."

This is not a dumb quote, but it is relevant when you consider people like Julian Simon. I'm attributing it to Andrew Bartlett, but I'm not sure who said it first:

"For every Ph.D there is an equal and opposite Ph.D"

This is the dumbest one I ever heard.

"I will kick the shit out of you"

This was said to me by a thug on the street after coming out of a nightclub. He failed to notice my other 2 army friends who were around the corner. We went gentle on him because we felt kinda sorry for him. After we finished making him look nice we dumped him outside the police station and he was later charged for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Late one day, in the middle of the night
Two dead boys came up to fight

Back to back they faced each other, with their swords they shot each other

The deaf policeman heard the noise, came up and killed the two dead boys

If you do not believe this story is true, ask the blind man, he saw it too.

Julian Simons must have been unaware that the sun is set to explode in ~4 billion years.

Dumb quotes close to home:

Are you aware that we may be close to the end of the age of cheap oil?

"Why should I care. I don't drive."

Are you aware that we may be close to the end of the age of cheap oil?

"Why should I care. I'll be dead before the situation affects me."

Are you aware that we may be close to the end of the age of cheap oil?

"Why should I care. What are you a hippie?"

Are you aware that we may be close to the end of the age of cheap oil?

"Why should I care. Someone smarter than me will solve the problem."

Are you aware that we may be close to the end of the age of cheap oil?

"Why should I care. Its just the oil companies manipulating the value for their own benefit."

Are you aware that we may be close to the end of the age of oil?

"Shut up. South Parks on."

O.K., maybe not all are exact quotes, but pretty damn close.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

As far as dumb quotes go, you could just about put anything that comes out of King Shrub's mouth as a stupid quote.

What a moron.........although not as dumb as the 51% or so of the voting population that put him back in the White House.

"Minerals are inexhaustible and will never be depleted. A stream of investment creates additions to proved reserves from a very large in-ground inventory. The reserves are constantly being renewed as they are extracted... How much was in the ground at the start and how much will be left at the end are unknown and irrelevant." - M.A. Adelman, economist.

Stupid, but I would be interested to know what he means by that 'how much will be left at the end' line.

Its actually true; just that the 'end' is a little closer than he realized, at which point it becomes quite relevant.
