You want frittering? Here are some dedicated, hard-core, serious fritterers:

PlayStation3 Demand Creates Rowdy Lines

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')olice were called to the Westfield Eastland Shopping Center in West Covina Friday to restore order when a disturbance broke out as about 300 people hoping to buy a PlayStation3 waited for two stores to open, authorities said.

This will undoubtedly happen in many places today.

These people should all be inducted into the Get A Life Hall Of Fame...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'A') new study on "Internet addiction" is out.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01571.html

Is the Internet becoming another plasticized facet of our "simulated lives"? A substitute for real living?

Perhaps the question to ask is, How would we NOT waste our time?

What does unwasted time look like? Feel like?

How do you get from waste to unwaste?

Maybe what matters is not how we spend our time, but how we experience its passage. THAT'S the thing to work on.

I like it.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

I've been cutting my time on line. I feel like it is going much better now. I was too hooked on this forum. (and Maple Trader) This is like anything else. Everything in moderation.

I found and ordered 2 additional varieties of Dock seed (Rumex). More diversity for my forest garden. Hardly a waste of time.

Check out the nutritional value of the leaves of this common "weed". 27% fat, 22% protein

Yeah, people always talk about there being something better for them to do. If it's enjoyable it's almost like society tells you that it isn't worthwhile.

I still think people can get addicted to things like the internet and forums like these though, has anyone analyzed why they are addicted to this forum at all? Could be a 9/11 type thing where people couldn't drag themselves from the TV in case they missed some news? Or maybe it's just because we have no where else to vent and who else will listen to our diatribes?

I think it's mainly that, PolestaR.

People who think as we tend to do---unconventionally, out of the mainstream---are for the most part terribly isolated.

In my own case, my opinions and beliefs are diametrically opposite those of the society around me. I'm anti-organized religion, anti-technology, anti-economic growth, anti-nationalism, anti-car . . . it's tough at times.

The discovery of, and interaction with, like-minded souls can be exciting, energizing, and somehow comforting.

What's more, you can learn a hell of a lot, as I know I have in my 2+ years here. It's wonderful being able to both offer and receive good, specific information on subjects from apple growing to you-name-it. So many smart, knowledgeable people here, as one might expect on so forward-looking a web site.

But if talking online becomes an end in itself, then I think there's a problem, and perhaps even an addiction.

I love talking to people here on this forum. They are all peak oil aware, whereas most people are like a friend of mine, who when I talked about peak oil told me about the car that GM invented that runs on seawater. He said that they won't let us have it, it was blocked by the oil and gas companies. I didn't know what to say. Otherwise this guy is very intelligent. It's hard to talk to people. They lack the background to understand what I'm saying. I guess I'll keep posting here, but try to keep it from overwhelming my life.

Much of my social life takes place online, as I'm quite isolated working at home and being different from most folks in my locale, so I definitely can become addicted to messageboards. It's really only a problem if I become very emotionally invested in the discussion. If I read, but don't post much, I'm usually ok.

Emotional investment is indeed risky, in any walk of life.

On the other hand, I find I can't get properly involved in an activity without at least some emotional engagement---some effort to connect at more than a purely superficial level.

But as you say, Ludi, the idea is not to overdo it. The risk/reward ratio for this particular activity just isn't favorable enough for that.

That's the way I feel every time I listen to the "news" or pick up a "newspaper." They just don't get it. I'm shaking my head the whole time.

I'm with you Heineken.

Even my DH thinks I'm going a bit wacky. I have to bite my tongue sometimes. This forum is a great source of comfort when you feel like you're losing it and nobody understands, also a fantastic resource for practical information, which is my other defense against fear.

Ludi makes a good point, I'll remember that. Safer that way.

I've encountered the absolute cruelest people online, who would just as soon cause one to die (suicide) and think it's funny. Truly horrible experiences. For gods sake don't reveal anything about your self, or ask any questions (seen as debating).

Well unfortunately a lot of people online (especially the big time users) are masters of cruelty after having spent much of their life being at the brunt of it. They have developed a "shell" to protect themselves from it but when someone who doesn't comes along and is in the cross hairs of a person like that watch out.

Your naiveness about suicide is a bit disturbing though. We as humans are a virus. Empathy is something we no longer need for our survival and all it does now is help spread our destruction further. Intelligence can and should override empathy, if it doesn't, you have things like 3rd world food aid which ends up causing more net deaths and unhappiness. How good is empathy there?

Unfortunately I think you, like a lot of other middle aged (and up) people will simply stick to your guns regarding anything other than peace and happiness. Even when the missiles are flying overhead or another ice age is approaching because of your attitudes.

It's up to the intelligent people open to change and the younger generation to really point the human species in the right direction. Relying on the John Lennon Ludi types is just going to get us all killed.
