Remember Remember the 5th of November
The gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason that the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

Here's wishing you all a happy 5th of November and hoping you each find a bit of insurrection in your lives.
"We were standing on the edges
Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

If you wish to celebrate insurrection, 5th of November is a sad day.

The 5th of November celebrates the fact that Guy Fawkes' insurrection against the State failed, and the Protestant State prevailed. Fawkes was regarded as a Catholic terrorist. Anti-Catholic feeling was widespread and encouraged by the Protestant authorities, and there were even anti-Catholic riots. In some parts, an effigy of the Pope is burned instead of Guy Fawkes.

The adoption of Protestantism by Britain was purely a political move to wrest power from the Pope. The people were persuaded to switch from Catholicism with suitable propaganda. There are parallels with McCarthyism, and the War on Terror.

So do we really want to be colluding with a State inspired "War on (Catholic) Terror" celebration?

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a suitable day in the UK where we can celebrate popular independence like July 4th, as we still haven't achieved it!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bobcousins', 'I')f you wish to celebrate insurrection, 5th of November is a sad day.
I disagree. The point is not so much wether you suceed, it's wether you try. The 1916 Easter Rebellion in Ireland was roundly unsucessful. The rebels were all arrested within 5 days. The leaders were shot. The people of Dublin jeered and spit on the rebels as they were marched past. Eventually though, it set off a process by which Ireland (most of it anyway) gained independence in 1921.

Of course the authorities are going to paint the insurgents in a bad light. Otherwise they wouldn't be the authorities. In any form of government, the most serious crime a person can commit is to attack the government.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Raphael', 'L')ook in the mirror ... look at that chiral image before you ... a graven image.
Are you actually high on acid when you write this stuff, or is it just flashbacks?

Some people can use profound metaphorics with or without drugs ;-)

Since we are always being limited is that why we try to limit?

My husband and I celebrated Nov. 5 by watching "V for Vendetta", starting at about 11.45pm on Nov. 4.

Unfortunately, the midnight scene is about 20 minutes into the movie. :P

Ah well, maybe next year.

Gotta agree with smallpoxgirl, though. Any attempt at revolution signals a failure by the authorities to command the minds of their subjects. (Mind you, here in Australia our biggest military celebration commemorates a miserable tactical failure followed by a bloody retreat. It's the thought that counts. :-) )

That is completely different, that was a popular revolt, an attempt to overthrow an oppressive regime.

Guy Fawkes is more like Timothy McVeigh. An attempt to destroy authority he didn't happen to like, but the majority did. Would you celebrate Oklahoma Bombing Day?

I don't disagree with the premise of insurrection, just that Guy Fawkes is a lousy example.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')uy Fawkes festivities have mixed with "mass disorder" to stretch emergency services to breaking point around New Zealand.

Emergency services last night described parts of the South Island as "like driving through a war zone", while police in the top half of the North Island took 423 reports of disorder in seven hours.

In Canterbury, fireworks were linked to scrub and house fires.

Christchurch police were last night also investigating the cause of a fire at Westburn School, in Ilam.

It seems that the mexicans didn't forget the fifth, but missed it by a few hours.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')ublished November 6, 2006, 8:56 PM CST

MEXICO CITY -- Homemade bombs exploded early Monday at the Federal Electoral Tribunal, a bank branch and the headquarters of the former ruling party in the country's capital, causing no injuries but rattling nerves in a country wracked by protests since a contested presidential vote.

A coalition of resistance groups claimed responsibility, but officials said it still wasn't clear who carried out the blasts.

We celebrated it with a nice bonfire and some fireworks.

I think I'll pass on explaining what it signifies to the neighbours. They still haven't got over Joan of Arc

Oh, and happy birthday, Seahorse.

I've always wondered why the English seem to "hate" the French more than vice versa; especially considering the English burned Joan of Arc that's pretty much up there with Jesus Christ (who coincidentaly never existed)

I don't really think the English hate the French, the English tend to laugh at everybody, themselves included. The French refer to England as Perfide Albion and still can't get over the fact that English beat French as the de facto International language.

As for Joan of Arc, she was burned by French collaborators. Plus ca change...
