$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')uy Fawkes festivities have mixed with "mass disorder" to stretch emergency services to breaking point around New Zealand.
Emergency services last night described parts of the South Island as "like driving through a war zone", while police in the top half of the North Island took 423 reports of disorder in seven hours.
In Canterbury, fireworks were linked to scrub and house fires.
Christchurch police were last night also investigating the cause of a fire at Westburn School, in Ilam.
