Education Level Poll

Unread postby Tyler_JC » Fri 06 Oct 2006, 17:52:23

To the best of my knowledge, no one has asked this as a poll question before on the site.

There is probably some kind of correlation between education and interest in Peak Oil.

85% of Americans have high school diplomas while only 27% have a bachelor’s degree.

I suspect that Peak Oilers will have higher education levels than the average.

Good question, but I would like to see a subtext, a secondary question: a correlation between chronic potheads and secondary degrees. My guess is that many of the secondary degree holders have smoked pot, but very few smoke it daily for years on end. Consider this as a secondary point. Carry on. Observant readers know where this is directed. 8)

Gotta agree about the library.

As for the rest I think YOU need a joint there PMS you got dope on the brain. Maybe even 2.

Hell I even had to change my signature to fit the vibe you're sending.

Oh yes and I'm a lowly high school grad.

A lot of smart kids don't go further with education because they hated high school. I think educators have much to learn in this area.

Yes it's true. But what are they trying to do? It is the job of every generation to bring up the next one. When that project falls apart, it doesn't bode well for the future.

Me and the kids have spent much time exploring stacks of books from the library, subjects randomly chosen.

Going out into the real world on "field trips" can also be very educational!

Personally, I studied education for two years and then switched to health records administration - been doing that since.

Alot of that is the generalized format(in favor of girls), the fact that they require more in the languages department than the math and science department(in favor of girls), and the fact that when they do teach language, it's less about format, and more about accepting "great literature" or novels ect (this also benefits women)...

It's well known that men on average prefer to read/learn about factual things, then read fictional novels.

The fact of the matter is, education is geared for girls, and this is completely intentional.

Who make up most of the educators/education majors? Women. Who tend to be the most ambitious women in terms of education and career? Feminist.

Who teaches (and writes the curriculum) for BA's in education? Women with Ph.ds

So in essence, because women who are more ambitious when it comes to education and career tend to be feminist, and education tends to be a female dominated profession, the way it's structured is going to largely be in favor of feminist values.

So what you get is alot of males hating education, because it's so incredibly biased against them(intentionally), and so we have a disparity of more women in college versus men.

The downside of this of course, is that men tend to be the breadwinners (as much as feminist try to refute this) because the women want to stay home and have children. So what this does, ultimately, is it forces women to have to work, and take care of kids, making their lives more miserable than before, because their husbands can't provide for them.

But if your a feminist, then it's a victory.

A backlash of this, is America is uncompetitive with the rest of the world, and is getting more so. Less highly educated males, less highly educated workforce in general. The women who want to have kids and stay home and focus on them are screwed, and are forced into a high stress situation.

Those women who do work and have kids, end up having kids who are less developed, and less able to handle the world around them, due to the fact that they didn't get all the love and care that they needed. So later, they need much much more therapy (most don't get what they need) and you end up with a generation of either people who nihilist, don't love/care as much about the rest of the community (because they never got the love they needed) , and alot of people going to any religious group (or cult) that can provide a sense of love that they lacked when they were younger.

The women who work, but don't want to have kids, have all their ducks in a row, and everything is in their favor.

If America has a future, it's with the unfeminized immigrants, or with the hostile to feminism religious right.

I graduated high school in 2005. I'm so glad I'm out, as I despise the whole high school experence. In that culture there's no place for a freethinking overachiever.
To this day I still see this group of people as the lowest common denominator when it comes to intellegence, there are a few exceptions though.
I'm in college now, exploring the science related fields. It will be a while before I get my degree, then go to graduate school, but only time will tell.

I didn't hate high school, but I really thought it was a waste of time, since I figured that 90 percent what I know I learned from books, which correlates with the remark above that the best education comes from access to books.

I also would add that having no access to a TV until a certain age definitely helps.
If you want to give your kid the best education take the TV away, and just support the natural curiosity.
Reading is very important, it doesn't matter what, as long as the kid WANTS to read, it can't hurt. I learned reading with comic books, because I simply wanted to know whats going on in the story...

After high school I really didn't know what to do, went to college for a few semesters and studied very unmotivated this and that without getting a degree, before jobbing a few years and travelling (which is arguably also a good education).
Currently I just reentered college and I really love it now, appreciate it much more...

I know the sample size is too small to generalize...but so far, advanced degrees are over-represented by an order of magnitude on this site.

This shouldn't surprise people. Peak Oil is a very complicated topic and in order to understand some of the finer points, some extra education is required. Some people manage to get this education from internet sites such as LATOC or EnergyBulletin but it appears as though most have picked up the skills necessary to understand that information from some kind of higher education.

Kylon, you are probably right with your theory. For decades, the educational system has been biased in favor of girls because they were falling behind. Now that it is the boys, not the girls, who are falling behind there doesn't seem to be a push to fix the situation. If current trends continue ( ) the last man to get his bachelor's degree will graduate in 2037.

http://www.pewinternet.org/trends/User_Demo_4.26.06.htm

Not surprisingly, people with higher incomes and people with more educational are far more likely to use the internet than people from low income families or people without college degrees.

I enjoy the perspective this poll provides yet I think there are so many factors to consider that a series of books and videos may be needed to fully understand and explain "why".

My "education" is on the low end of this "spectrum" as I think I have 65 credit hours under my belt but would have to check ;-)
I could have earned a very acredited free degree online in my spare time but passed as the curriculum was limited and I worked 10 hours a day any damn ways!! ;-)

I would like to ask "how long did it take everyone here to understand and become convinced of peak oil?"

Things occured in rapid succession for me - few baby steps required and even those were simple math errors barrels, gallons, millions, billions, ton, tonne etc etc.
Funny as math was always my forte ;-)

I would like to go a step further and ask "how many of you went straight from denial to doomer?"

That is the pattern that I see.
Full tilt from one side to the other within the blink of an eye.

It equates well with the neocon "we gotta do something!!! everything in our power!! the USA is going to shit!" myth - - - total doomers messing things up more then trying to fix anything - cant be fixed right? ;-)

ya feelin me?anyone? class?

I do not think we can discount any of our experiences.
Some children as well as adults may be "drained" by TV yet look at how profoundly Video can effect people and dare I say "educate" people.

The media of TV/video/film has often times been used to sell, spread propaganda or otherwise manipulate and perhaps even dumb us down yet I dont think we needed much help there;-)

The internet: Without video/tv/film I would not feel as I do about global warming, 9/11 or even PO yet it was the internet that brung it all together.
Take the internet away and I am just one of the herd.
bahhhh rage against the machine bahhhhahh system of a down bahahahah ;-)

I listened, watched, read and otherwise sank myself into the subject matter and that my friends IS higher education!

You cant buy it because the shit is priceless!!!

Lets see here...... what president pushed hard to get computers and cable in the classroom? ahhh yes... real power to the people!

No teachers - all students.

I want to thank the Professors of Peak Oil for being brave enough and caring enough to present the subject matter...thank you!!

I want to thank all of the conductive members of PO.com for making this moment possible...thank you!!

<grabs his Peak Oil degree and then moons the crowd while yelling "peak oil bitches!!!"> ;-)

Saw whats-his-name on the House floor one evening last year I think, so I guess the clock starts then. Don't remember the date. So maybe eighteen months. I brushed him off at first, just sounded like walking silliness at the time.

Then chased the GW argument to po-debunked on usenet, then over here because of someone's claim of censorship, then got curious enough to poke some numbers... GW/ PO/ HousingBubble/ Medicare+SS...

DUDE WE ARE IN DEEP S*****.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') would like to go a step further and ask "how many of you went straight from denial to doomer?"

Been a GW & Medicare+SS doomer for a very long time. Can't fix it, won't fix it type. Housing bubble makes this a bit worse.

PO slams the spike home.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 't')rying to fix anything - cant be fixed right?

There does not exist any fix within the realm of the politically possible. Even the realm of all physically possible approaches is pretty marginal.

edit: typo (eighteen instead of eight.. kinda different, no?)

I left the university when I realized that they didn't want me to think for myself. There was definitely an agenda that I was expected to embrace. Took me three years to realize that. Doesn't matter, still make about what I would with a degree at this point...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NEOPO', 'I') would like to ask "how long did it take everyone here to understand and become convinced of peak oil?"

Convinced? About one month. Understand? We are all still learning.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NEOPO', 'I') would like to go a step further and ask "how many of you went straight from denial to doomer?"

Same time it took to become convinced, one month.

High School? What a joke. They played the same games that I saw at the university. Concentrations on minority literature and such. I read "Raisin In The Sun" three times, do you think that there was some reason for that? While I was in HS they also eliminated... Drafting, Auto shop and carpentry... guess what? The rednecks stopped coming to school. They didn't fit into the agenda.

he is a stone cold racist so I hope his gold turns to lead and his lead turns to dust ;-)

So, no one here see's the link between education and doomerism?

I think doomers got it all wrong and its an easy way out because they do not have to do anything - no lifestyle changes etc etc.

Its an easy way out just like those who believe its all a conspiracy.
Easy way out.
Not trying to offend but this is my best guess as to why so many people go from denial to rationalization.
Seems the more educated they are the less hope they have and I personally believe modern education is the reason for this.
It promotes conformity and thus they conform to the easiest path = doomer.

Why are the doomers still here? arent they convinced there is nothing that can be done about PO - isnt that enough or are they here to try and pull others into their magnet tar pit trap?
Its almost as if they want the worst to occur.

If this is education then education is brainwashing.
It is easier to enslave a people that wish to remain free then it is to free a people who wish to remain enslaved.
