"Sundown" - Gordon Lightfoot
youtube

"Wanna be a Baller" - Lil Troy
gangstatube

Pink Floyd is the best, but not obscure. One of my favorites is "Fearless"
short clip

Almost forgot -

"Fresh Air" - Quicksilver Messanger Service
Amazon clip

The live version is the best, but I can't find a clip at the moment...

I can't remember who performed most of these but:

"Baked Beans Song" (about baked beans)

"The Newcastle Song" (about a carload of lairs cruising the streets of Newcastle for chicks)

"Rack off Normie" (a girl's answer to The Newcastle Song)

"I Wanna be Straight" (I'm sick and tired of taking drugs and staying up late)

That song about the 'hole in my shoe that was letting in water' (by the Young Ones)

"Love is in the Air" John Paul Young

"Loving You" Minnie Ripperton

"Farewell Aunty Jack" - by Aunty Jack and sidekick

"Water" (All day I face the barren waste, without a taste of water. Cool water.....)

I apologise to the Americans. Most of these were from a time when the Australian music scene actually had some Australian and UK input before the cultural takeover from US.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

I tried downloading "Newcastle..." and "Rack Off..." but couldn't get a good source and Limewire is not coming up with anything at all for "Aunty...", baby. What radio were you listening to and just exactly what sort of drugs were you taking?

You know, a typical intelligent planet such as Earth, in it's more or less ten billion year lifetime is entitled to produce at least one amazing spectacle such as provided by twin, albino rock stars.

Johnny and Edgar Winter very nearly captured that prize failing only the "twin" part of that requirement but they look so much alike that that earn it almost by default. They sure seemed like Earth's Big Deal to me when I first heard "Frankenstein" from their album "They Only Come Out At Night". Their unbelievable strangeness seemed camouflaged only by their fame.

Still, Johnny and Edgar Winter didn't seem to go much further after that. They still play concerts but not together and they don't have that same weird out-of-this-world persona they had when that album hit.

Went to an Edgar Winters show some years ago...

After a 2 hour delay, Edgar walked out on stage & up to the Mic...

Then he fell flat on the stage... dead drunk.

Show canceled.

What an asshat.

Well, that's kind of the theme of this thread...songs that went nowhere. Stunning effect and then...nothing.

Camp Granada, heh heh, yep, a one-hit wonder, but I woudln't call it incredible:

Camp Granada (Allan Sherman)

Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda
Here I am at Camp Granada
Camp is very entertaining
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining

I went hiking with Joe Spivey
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner

All the counselors, hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators
And the head coach, wants no sissys
So he reads to us from something called Ullyses

Now I don't want, this should scare ya
But my bunkmate has malaria
You remember, Jeffrey Hardy
They are 'bout to organize a searching party

Nope... he was all the rage at the time... many hits.

A very clever wordsmith.

1. "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" – 2:38
2. "Bright College Days" – 3:03
3. "A Christmas Carol" – 2:54
4. "The Elements" (Music by Sullivan) – 2:16
5. "Oedipus Rex" – 3:41
6. "In Old Mexico" – 6:26
7. "Clementine" – 4:40
8. "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier" – 4:50
9. "She's My Girl" – 2:53
10. "The Masochism Tango" – 3:30
11. "We Will All Go Together When We Go" – 5:32

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you? 'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We've gained notoriety,
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
With our games.
They call it impiety
And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel* or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment,
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strych'nine
We feed to a pigeon.
(It just takes a smidgin!)
To poison a pigeon in the park.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be French fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Well, here's one you can listen to online...

It was sort of before my time, thank god, so I don't remember it. But it's classified as a one-hit wonder on www.onehitwondercentral.com.

It's not even a song! How could it be a one hit wonder? What self-respecting youth demanded to hear this crap? Does anyone remember this?

1967 - Victor Lundberg "An Open Letter To My Teenage Son"

I just checked out the One Hit Wonder site. I remember almost all of those songs - a trip back to my adolescence.

Johnny & Edgar Winter - I sang in a band a long time ago, did backup vocals for a couple of their songs. Fun!

If you happened to see 'Vendetta', a prominently featured song in that film was 'I Cried A River" (1955) by Julie London.

Wow! I bet she captured a few1955 hearts with that one.

Julie London

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Wiki', 'J')ulie London (September 26, 1926 – October 18, 2000) was an American singer and actress. Best known for her smoky, sensual voice, as a singer she was at her peak in the 1950s; her acting career lasted more than 35 years, ending with the role of nurse Dixie McCall, RN, on the TV show Emergency! (1972–1979).

Born in Santa Rosa, California, as Gayle Peck, she was the daughter of Jack and Josephine Peck, who had a vaudeville song-and-dance team. When she was 14, they moved to Los Angeles. Shortly after that, she began appearing in movies. She graduated from the Hollywood Professional High School in 1944.

She was married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame. Her obvious beauty and poise (she was a pinup girl prized by GIs during World War II)...

Do you guys use peer-to-peer software like Limewire or one of the other packages?

It's free software and safe as long as you use a firewall and don't download any executables - just stick to mp3 files and such. Watch the file lengths, too. If you see something that is only 380Kb in size, stay away from it. Most songs range from around 2500Kb to 7-8000Kb or so. I've never had any trouble and I've now got a whole library of music that I've downloaded.

If you've got a cable internet connection, it takes just a few minutes to grab a song. It's easy to get things like one-hit wonders but it's harder to get current jazz or something that isn't widely known. Or am I preaching to the choir?
