Few things.

One, get rid of that little banner that slides across the screen on your companys homepage. Annoying as hell, and not impressive to potential clients.

Two, you where offering service to an oil company and that brought you to This site? I'm curious how that chain of reasoning went on, because I'd be really interested if the oil company pointed you to this site.

Finally, welcome to the site, have questions, ask away. =)

Welcome aboard. Don't let the occasional nutcase rants scare you off:-) Meanwhile you'll also find people here who are highly knowledgeable about electric vehicles, and also a couple of nuclear engineers. I'd say it's worthwhile to listen to the latter as well, because the new generation of fission reactors are intrinsically safe and the waste issue easily solved via recycling waste into fuel.

The climate-clean energy mix of the mid-term future is wind, solar, and nuclear, plus efficiency improvements on the consumption side, and good oldfashioned conservation.

Nutcase rants.. I'm cool with that. From what I've learned, it's like a religion, some people believe and some people don't. From my name I bet you can guess what I believe :) Thanks for welcoming me guys.

Ummm... you have been here way too long to still believe that man.

It may well be viable... but not yet, & certainly not easily.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Wow my first post and I got attacked. No worries. I would like to know NEOPO, why don't you like me? Is it my name, Renewable Energy? Is it because I said religion? Is it because I'm not a pothead like you?

Gideon, I can see your response in two ways. No I won't add you to my ignore list and for sure I don't put my head in the sand!

I'm a mod on a few forums and I know how business should be conducted. For starters most websites expect respect from members to other members (unless otherwise noted). As you can see from my first post that's what I did.

I came here to learn and share, if you want to attack me cool, bring it on!

Whats in a name aye?
Its like going to a religion forum with the name "Atheistboy" and expecting a warm welcome.

You call that "attacked" heheheh stick around buddy!

and dont start on the pot head shit.

Best to not GO THERE......... with me at least.
Like tossing peaches against a brick wall - you are the peach - I am the wall.

BTW - I dont have an ignore list......ignorance is not bliss.

yes we have people who have been here long enough to know better yet I see many of them rolling over daily into denial and rationalization.

YEAH we need more overly optomistic people in denial...thats what PO.COM needs ....uh huh.

Are you saying that Renewable Energy doesn't belong here at Peak Oil? lol what can I say. You still didn't come out and say why you don't like me. I would like a stright answer dude. A one line answer would do for me.

As for your pot smoking and calling me a peach, lol. Go smoke another dude.

Remember you picked this.. talk with me and I'm happy to keep it going!

I'm here to learn, promote a better way of living, I guess promote Renewable Energy. Think about it without oil no plastics, is that a wake up call?

A little overwhelmed - where to start?

Unread postby Veritas » Sun 01 Oct 2006, 19:47:14

Greetings,

I was wondering what reading people would suggest as a good starting point for learning about peak oil, the post-oil future, alternative energies, etc.

The essence of my interest, and my studies, is to assess what the options are for the future. What transition strategies can we use, what should we reasonably expect.

I first became interested in the "low tech" future after reading a 1970-ish article by a guy named George McCrobie (i believe that was the author's name), which talked about the need to develop products locally in the event of high oil prices. The normal capitalist logic of mass production and economies of scale gets turned upside-down a bit when you can't ship everything everywhere for a negligible cost.

More recently I stumbled back across the peak oil issue (I wrote an essay on it like 7 years ago and pretty much forgot about it), and saw an opportunity for study. My background is political science and history, and I've held off on a masters/phD for lack of a subject that I could really say defined what I wanted to spend my life generating knowledge and expertise on.

Peak oil and a post-cheap-oil future strike a very solid chord, and it seems like there is a pretty significant amount of expertise already built up (judging by the activity and posts on this forum and the number of articles/news reports).

For someone just getting their feet wet on the issue, what is the best place to start? I've bought 3 books that I'm currently reading, and I'll be browsing through the many posts on this forum to learn what I can here as well. The books I've got are Kunstler's "The long emergency" (he's a sensationalist for sure, but its an easy read and there are some interesting historical facts and theories in there), David Goodsteins "Out of Gas", and Richard Heinberg's "Power Down". These were pretty arbitrary choices, so if there's any book we'd consider a must-read or an authoritative source, I'd like to know so I can get that under my belt before getting into more arterial reading.

Thanks,

-Ver

Welcome and great start.

Those are fine reading choices, don't rush through them, they have a lot to say.

I aslo suggest "Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update", which is a not a "PO" book, but a more general book about resource depletion, the pollution of Earth, and possible (chaotic) population collapse. However there are many other fine choices.
Read this for starters:
An Interview with Dennis Meadows - co-author of ‘Limits to Growth’.

If you are young, you may be able to adjust your lifestyle/career to fit in with possible post-PO - or post peak natural resource scenarios.

There's also a great deal of more specific material available in various forums here.

I think Heinberg's first book ("The Party's Over") is the best general introduction to the subject. It's a far better book than "Powerdown," although the latter proposes a crucial idea. So, I'd read "Party's Over" before "Powerdown."

To help put PO into a broader geopolitical perspective, I strongly recommend "The Sorrows of Empire," by former CIA analyst Chalmers Johnson. It's a brilliant, well-researched, and frightening book, a shocking eye-opener to what's going on. Even manages to be entertaining.

Also, as pstarr notes, "Twilight in the Desert." Important but dull reading. I skipped over most of the field-by-field analysis and just read the beginning and end portions of the book. Along with the scary implications, the book provides some decent understanding of what's involved in producing oil; very valuable for the non-geologist.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Veritas', 'G')reetings,

First you must learn where this mess started, and how many times these problems have been faced before, and how they may or may not be different this time.

It just occurred to me that we've already had a forum on PO reading matter. This discussion should be merged with that.
