Re: Growing rice question?

Upland rice varieties don't require flooding that "regular" rice varieties need, so there is potential using upland varieties in climates where flooding isn't possible. However, I know of a couple experienced gardeners in the upper midwest (WIs, Minn, Iowa, etc) who have tried growing it and have decided it isn't worth the effort, and that growing barley, wheat, or oats makes more sense in this part of the world.

I agree Jim it makes the most sense to grow crops that are proven to be adapted to the area, unless one is willing to put in the extra effort of an exotic crop.

For myself, I'm happy to find anything that will grow! So far most of my exotic experiments have failed....

I recommend Masanobu Fukuoka's books about growing rice and other grains with only hand methods (and less work).

I hope its for fun only? Becouse right now you can get it for dirt-cheap, and properly stored it will last a looong time.

I'm in a 3b zone, so I'm sure I would have to create some kind of micro climate to grow rice. If I can't make that happen, I will sure miss rice!

What makes you think that rice will stop being imported from areas that grow rice? Global warming and all, the world should still be producing a hell of a lot of rice for quite a while.

Produce, yes. But how much will it cost to ship from the Katy prairie in Texas up to Wisconsin? In addition, rice production in the US is one of the most specialized and mechanized of all ag crops, if fertlizer and airplane fuel became too expensive, there is no way US growers can transition to less oil intensive and more labor intensive methods.

Any of you grow rice?

Unread postby Narz » Sat 28 Jul 2007, 21:31:32

How hard is it to grow/harvest rice? Anyone grow wild rice? According to nutritiondata.com it's alot healthier than even regular brown rice. Double the protein, more minerals and much more balanced Omega 3 to 6 ratio.

Wild Rice vs.
Brown Rice.

I don't think I've heard anyone here talking about rice growing and I wonder why not. One of the #1 foods of the world, right?

Pretty interesting for thoses of us living near wetlands..guerrilla farming perhaps !? And most peoples don't know how it really look like as a plant..

That's a nice idea..small gardening at home and guerrilla farming in the wild with hunting..the best of the agriculture with the best of the hunter-gatherers,i like the idea :D !

The Native Americans used to harvest the wild rice in the lakes in Minn. in the 70's. It was off limits to everyone else. In the tropics rice can be grown year after year without much fertilizer of any kind. Of course you get better yields with some composting. But in the studies somehow the alge in the rice fields fixed nitrogen directly from the air.

Any chance the rice could be sent to our homes?

This is actually an enjoyable little brain teaser, I spent an hour or so playing it last night.

Strange and bizarre stuff..

Can this be considered "enterteinment"? I'm just wondering.

Do they plan to put a webcam showing the face of the guy who is going to get the rice so we can see his expression as we win or lose? That would boost their audience.

IT'S PATHETIC.

It can be considered advertising.

Fun one time. I don't know what good 1800 grains of rice are going to do anyone. It's supposedly non-profit and the advertisers pay for the rice. Little do they know that I ignore advertising.

I have an exceptional vocabulary though. :-D
