$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Nicole', 'Y')ou guys crack me up.! So there I was, pondering how one goes about dating in a world where what you REALLY want to ask, "So how would you feel about settling down in Oregon in a geothermal house with a couple of greenhouses, a herd of goats, a chicken coop and a large underground storage area that doesn't appear on the tax assessor's records or the blueprints?"

This thread came up #1 on a Google search!

well nicole with credentials like that you will likely find a man real quick on this board. :-D

Oh, I don't have that geothermal house yet... well, I do, but only in my mind and sketches on paper. :-D Gotta find the land first; and wow, arable property prices are pretty high anywhere you have water. Cheaper than they will be, though.

I wouldn't mind a lesbian marriage at all! I'm a European communist as well!

The only question is how do I convert to Feminism? Do I have to surgically remove my foreskin or can it be done with prayers?

Being PO aware definitely seems to hurt in dating/relationships. Bringing the topic up has ended a few relationships I was in that might otherwise have lasted a bit longer. The reaction a girl has to you bringing up PO and making some mild suggestions on what you plan to do to prepare gives a pretty good indication of whether she's a golddigger IMO. It's therefore probably a good thing those relationships ended early!

I'm coming to the realization that there's no way I could be in any sort of long term relationship with a girl who isn't PO aware and actually wants to do something to prepare. Seeing as this rules out 99.999% of the women around my age group (24), I'm thinking I could well be single for a very long time. I'm athletic, decent looking and in law school (this last point really and tellingly seems to help), so finding a girl to have a 1-5 night stand with when I can't go without sex any longer isn't a problem. I just wish there was some woman out there I could have meaningful relationship with.

Hang in there, auscanman. The type of young woman you're describing is out there! Really, I personally know a couple of them, smart, PO aware, healthy, attractive young women. Just a hint - perhaps you might run into some of them at a protest march or a community garden workshop, if you're so inclined? Good luck!

Equally difficult for us single gay dudes in the crowd. OTOH, getting rid of the proverbial gold diggers early on, is probably a good thing. Most recent chat with a guy who on one hand thinks the climate crisis is going to be hell, but on the other hand sees no reason to change his career plans. Sigh.

But what the hey, may as well have a go at it:

Gay, GenX, looking for LTR. Northern California, smarts & skills, plans in place, community formed, will have land by the end of this year. Values count, hard work counts, smart/creative counts. For more on me, search my postings & read up, and expect I'll be reading yours.

---

OTOH, for y'all single straight folks out there: consider the bright side, that if you stay single, you're not adding to the population overshoot.

Are there gay gold diggers too? At least its reassuring to hear that obliviousness and duplicity exists for all types of relationships.

Although I am NOT one to really be posting in this forum (I'm married) i can say it's easier (on the long term mental and physical well-being) to blow through a dozen pointless flings to arrive at a viable LTRwith someone who gets it than it is to "re-educate" someone who doesnt.

I've been lucky to a point. The missus gets it enough to allow me to make real preparations for us but is skeptical enough to use it against me in an arguement.

"You and your damn the world is ending and we are all gonna die..." leads off those kind of arguements. Like I said though, at least she gets it at a certain level.

The proverbial gold-diggers are easy to handle; they're just after fiat currency. After TSHTF, they truly will be gold diggers.

Who said you had to be single to be childless? Just take the metal screen off the microwave door, and a few months later, your girlfriend is barren!

Yo, Perdition: If taking the metal screen off the microwave had that kind of effect, I'd set up an internet appliance dealerhip tomorrow and sell screenless microwaves.

PeaJay, agreed, better to keep looking than to try to re-educate someone whose version of Sunday worship is a trip to the mall. Seems you did get lucky though, as far as reasonably possible, in that your wife is at least aware of this.

As for her "You and your damn world-is-ending crap" item is concerned: If all of us around here were totally honest about it, my guess is that the vast majority of us would prefer life-as-usual and back to the mid 20th century when energy & real estate were both affordable, and there was no difference between "affordable" and "market rate" (what a difference overpopulation makes!), and people had savings accounts, and kids could play outside without having to put on their Kevlars first.

I hate the drama, emergencies, "excitement" with blood on it, lawlessness, and the whole entire slew of stinking shit that's heading our way. I wish it wasn't so. I wish I could go into the woods and live sustainably because "it was the right thing to do," not because it made the difference between life & death.

Sustainability, like much else in life, is enjoyable when your life does not depend on it. Think about how you feel about playing your favorite board game, and think about how it would change if you knew that losing a round would mean getting a foot or a hand chopped off.

No doubt your wife also resents like hell having her nose rubbed in a future that's a stinking pile of poo. No one likes to be constantly reminded of the bad news.

But that's why we all have got to stick together and be willing to roll up our sleeves, build what we must build, fight when we must fight, learn all we can learn, and teach all we can teach. When the future looks like a pile of poo, the thing anyone with a good brain or a good heart must do is try to figure out how to turn it into fertilizer and grow something.

PO Matchmaking -- Singles (merged)

Unread postby Lumpy » Wed 18 Jun 2008, 21:16:33

I've been thinking that there are "singles connections" online based on everything. Being Catholic, having the right "Chemistry", belonging to MENSA, etc, etc, etc ...

There should be a Peak Oil Singles Connection. Seriously ... if you are a 'true believer', 'doomer', etc, and single, you are not going to want to be with someone who is out buying a V8 guzzler because he/she got such a great price on it, right???? (i.e. 'clueless')

And of greatest interest to me are PO aware folks (like us) who have land with water, etc, but need more bodies who want to work it, and share in the fruits of the soil, and ownership of the place eventually, based on a charter agreement -- plus understand that working for $$ off-property while $$ can still be earned is important. (The more we pour into preps now, the better off we will be.)

Ideally, these would be PO aware people who are willing and able to work (both on the property and off, for as long as jobs last), but don't have the $$ to buy their own place to get started on, and don't want to wait around for the freight train that's coming to just squash them flat.

How could we go about matching up these sets of folks, do you think?

I can't commend you enough for this idea. Why hasn't anyone brought it up before? I'll be touring tons of ecovillages in the near future and I hope to meet a girl who is peak oil aware as well but I've had a hell of a time. There's just too many distractions for girls these days that none of them seem to be able to sort through all the shit. Anyways, I can't wait to see how this thread takes off.

OK, so we could create a new forum.

PO Singles seeking like minded singles, or Ecovillage Oportunities.

This could be a helpful service to the community.

Close, Domus -- but I am thinking more in terms of "intentional communities" rather than Ecovillages.
