Asteroid 2004 XP 14 will be flying close by Earth on Monday morning, according to WeatherBug quoting The Scotsman. The rock is around half a mile wide. The word 'close' means in cosmological terms, of course.

The asteroid, discovered in December 2004, at first produced concerns that it could hit Earth later in the century but subsequent studies ruled out such a collision.


However, 2004 XP14 has been classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid, or PHA, by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., because of the proximity of its orbit to Earth and its estimated size, The Scotsman said.

Yah I actually had a thread on how we could use asteroids or moon rocks as a power source, by utilizing the gravitational potential energy that those objects have.

I made another thread about this, but nobody replied, or took me seriously.

Yah, but if we mined the moon, ripped off moon rocks, moved them to Earth, and then projected them at a specific site, we could generate alot of heat/power.

Ontop of that, we'de have a cheap form of concrete, moon based concrete, and it would provide the economic incentive to begin construction of moon colonies, as people would be mining the moon for the moon rock, so that they could use it as a power source.

No, that was not a joke. Moon Power is a possible power source that we could use.


Furthermore, not only could using moon rocks as a power source, by manipulating their enormous gravitational potential energy allow us to build moon colonies, but we could begin using that to lay down layers of materials to harness/focus light, which could then be focused on places on Earth, and used as a power source(wouldn't be economically to absorb the energy their and then beam into microwaves, but would be much more productive harnessing the pure light, and projecting it to a reciever station on Earth).

Ummm...I think it would probably be cheaper using gold as a building material than concrete from the moon.

The reason why concrete from the moon would be viable is simple- It's a natural by-product of extracting the gravitational potential energy from the mass.

By taking moon rock, then hurling it onto a pad on Earth to absorb the energy, or by taking the moon rock, and throwing it on a glider/energy generator type thing, weighing it down, and such, and feeding off the power, you could/would extract energy from it.

The power produced by would then be sold.

Now, their might not be a huge amount of moon concrete, but the moon concrete there was, would be a by-product of moon mining, and gravity energy extraction. They would, be, in reality, nothing more than rocks from another world.

So they could be used to make concrete, unless we find somehow, that the properties of the moon rock take lower energy photons and convert them to higher energy photons, because the moon emits more gamma radiation than it recieves when hit by sunlight, but that's another story.

I'm a super genius in certain respects, and a complete retard in respect to other aspects of myself.

I have extreme strengths and extreme weaknesses.

I'm a little crazy, and I'm extremely eccentric.

I'm exceptionally gifted when it comes to planning things out, and strategy, and what not, but I have horrible will power.

But I'm going to take care of that(and I am) with my neurogenic treatment(which if done improperly will kill anyone who trys to use it, I'm someone who knows everything about it, and I still suffer from toxic side effects of the treatment). I'm hoping to get another piece of technology built soon to take care of that(but not right now, as I am spending my time working on a new type of generator thing, which will take most of my attention, also I'm in college right now, and I have to do a research paper on Epigenetics and all that).

If this asteroid hits it will likely cause a tsunami the likes of which humans have never seen. Even though it’s “only” 1000 feet wide, it’s capable of wiping out most costal cities off the North Pacific Ocean (based on the estimated impact zone). The U.S, Central America, Asia, and Oceania will see billions of dollars damage and countless lives lost. It’s hardly something worth ignoring. Fortunately we have the technical capabilities to divert an asteroid if only we decide to do so.

And this is the crux of the matter. Civilisation must either sink or swim. No amount of environmental efforts or powerdown back to nature ideals can save our species if we give up on space development. Because large asteroids will continue to bombard this planet and the only way to make civilisation sustainable in the long term is to first learn how to deflect asteroids, and also learn how to utilise off world resources.

Sink or swim. It’s extinction or space for humanity.


Kylon, interesting idea about ‘lunacrete’, but wouldn’t it be better utilised as lunar building materials? As for energy, lunar solar arrays and solar power satellites are a far greater prospect for sustainable clean power in the future.
