famous peaknik list

Postby NeoPeasant » Fri 23 Jun 2006, 14:40:28

I would like to start compiling a list of well known influential people who have acknowledged the reality of peak oil and the likelyhood it is near, as well as peak oil quotes attributed to them. The reason for this is that it is easier to convince someone if you can quote someone they know and respect with similar political leanings. For Instance, quoting Clinton or Gore here in Utah is about useless but being able to quote our senior republican senator Orrin Hatch on peak oil makes an impression.

Here is the beginning of my list, feel free to add to it and include any quotes you have handy.

Richard Raintree

T Boone Pickens

Bill Clinton

Al Gore

Prince Charles

James Schlesinger

James Woolsey

Senator Orrin Hatch

Ed Rendell, governor of Pennsylvania. I'm not sure if he's verbally acknowledged peak oil, but his policies seem to indicate that he has. He has jump started the coal to liquids project in Gilberton by promising to power all State diesel vehicles with the output and he was influential in starting 10 new biofuel plants across the State. I've met this man, along with John Street, Mayor of Philadelphia, and I believe in him and would like to see him run for president.

How about a total DICK?.. See if you can guess who said this in 1999:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('some guy', 'B')y some estimates, there will be an average of two-percent annual growth in global oil demand over the years ahead, along with, conservatively, a three-percent natural decline in production from existing reserves. That means by 2010 we will need on the order of an additional 50 million barrels a day.

and this in 2001:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('some guy', 'T')he most significant difference between now and a decade ago is the extraordinarily rapid erosion of spare capacities at critical segments of energy chains. Today, shortfalls appear to be endemic. Among the most extraordinary of these losses of spare capacity is in the oil arena.

I knew you could do it. The man's timing (as well as moral compass, some would say)is a bit off but he's got one thing going for him: a firm grasp of the situation.

Biggus Dickus simply stated the decline and necessary replacement figures. To my knowledge, he never actually publicly voiced the logical conclusion that we really don't have a chance in hell of actually achieving those replacement barrels.

That's true, but words are much easier to post with quotation marks around them. And actions are usually accompanied by an elaborate system of excuses and false reasons to disquise their real purposes.

Prime minister Göran Persson of Sweden.
Peak oil is not an energy crisis. It is a liquid fuel crisis.
