Exhibition: (S)peak oil - what a joke

Unread postby Free » Fri 09 Jun 2006, 20:28:10

You probably can imagine how excited I was when I discovered that some kind of science exhibition in my city, Vienna, also had a module "(S)peak oil".

Here is the website:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The End of Petrol, or the Refined Soul

Question: How long can the world go on like this?
Theme: Miscalculated future and black magic

Petrol is the fuel of our well-being. It is gradually becoming
scarce—the more we use it, the quicker. Nobody can or wants to tell us how scarce petrol actually is. Speak oil has led extensive discussions with representatives of oil companies, investment firms, geologists, human rights specialists and consumers.
Our car in Favoriten invites you to take an acoustic trip into the petrol world and asks a pressing question: How much has oil become the substance of our existence and the essence of our refined souls?

So I went there straight away, happily in the thought that PO finally has hit mainstream near my home!

Boy was I disappointed when I was there. "Acoustic journey" my ass!
All it was was an old Autobus where you could listen to some kind of arty farty radio play, which was loosely centered around oil and PO, but wtf, I swear if you didn't know about PO before, you would have thought it was some weird esoteric buddhist shit...

The guy who was there also didn't know shit, "I am just guarding the installation...", and there was no other material to read or watch whatsoever...

This is supposed to be about science! Facts facts facts! Instead it's wishi washi crap!

Allegedly there is a weekly experts round table with oil executives etc., I wonder if I should show up and ask some hard questions, any suggestions to counter cornucopian BS?
Maybe I should bring the Hirsch report with me? Problem is that this report is for the US...

Cut the "science" bullshit and become an "organisation programmer" instead. Then you'll have the time to test vibrating butt plugs, to take long afternoon shits in the corporate toilet with your favourite magazine and to watch the World Cup on TV during working hours... And to make a shit load of money while you're doing it! Science is for losers, zen-buddhism programming is for winners...

Lol, looks like somebody has found his dream job! :-D

And still I seem to remember quite a lot of whining and moaning and groaning about how horrible your job was, and particularly the Germans who turned your life into a living hell...

So tell us, what made it change? Cherchez la femme, I bet! Or is it just the sweet smell of illegal substances that is abundant...

Yeah as long as I am allowed to program and test something else than butt plugs, I would like to do it.

In fact I am planning to start studying computer science (Informatik) in autumn... I know I know, not a smart career move for post PO, but the hell I don't care, there is even an "Energy technology" study, but I just don't fancy planning energy grids and the like...and for career it's just too late anyway, I am already 28 and will keep enjoying wasting my life...

Stay out of the IT business Free! It sucks. Get an honest profession instead.

I actually have a complicated relationship to my job. It really sucks but I can "space out" (see Office Space...) for weeks if I like. It's a bit complicated to explain but if you get into the IT business you'll understand. We kind of produce results in bursts. We sit for weeks and months and look at the screen and pretend to work. If that gets too boring after a while we look for a meeting where we can eat free cookies and look "focused on the task". Then we work overtime like there was no tomorrow to get the project delivered in time and on budget.

And I actually love Germany and the Germans...

Yeah don't worry Schwein, if I do it I only do it for myself, not to get into the business. The bachelor degree is fairly general, and then I still have a variety of master studies to choose a specialization...

If the current modus operandi of your job sucks so much, why don't you start your own business? Just do it for a year or two more, safe some cash and then make your own porn site or something

If you are your own boss you purely work for yourself, and you don't have to do this mind numbing "pretend to work" shit.

Of course you probably would earn much less, but I would choose something which is fulfilling always over something which brings more cash...

So you love the Germans, yeah right, just wait until they get thrown out of the world cup early and are in a stinking moaning mood again
